We are thinking about enabling a feature to mark a thread post as the best answer and have the following two options:
  1. Thread starter has the right to select the best answer
  2. Everyone can vote on the posts and the post with highest vote becomes the best answer
Which is the preferred option considering the types of forums we have on TE?

Any kind of "Best Answer" thingie will spoil this forum. It'll favor groupism and people won't post their opinion if it's going to answer just one part of the question. And you've seen that how original queries/requirements keep on changing in due course of discussion. No one posts a complete answer which can be voted as best.

If you are turning TE into a QnA website then whichever option you implement is fine; otherwise forums are best known for its open 'discussions'.

I would say 2nd option is better.
Will this best answer voting by members be separate from LIKEs ?
Yes it will be separate.

Can you please elaborate on how it will favor groupism and stop people from responding? How will it curb discussion?
If we see there is merit in your argument then it can be implemented only for specific forums like buying help.
