I bought a Lite-on 167T sometime back b'coz everywhere their drives are rated best. But now I have a slight problem:The tray refuses to open fully and sometimes is stuck half-way and needs to be nudged for it to open fully.Cleaning the drive has had no effect.
Should I get it replaced?
Only reason I ask this is that I dread the "going for replacement routine'" in NP. :ohyeah:
Since many other people have Lite-ON drives, have any of you had similar problems?

i think liteon does have this prob even my cdwriter has this prob but not so bad as urs it comes out 97% but luckily it doesnt pose a prob while placing the cds other than that it rocks

Yeah after cleaning it comes out more but still not fully.Thing is :Is it supposed to auto-retract after a few seconds?Coz when I pull it out fully it stays there for ever without pressing the button but when a little portion is still inside it auto-retracts after a few seconds.

Thanks for waring undertaker , i was thinking of advicing that rom to one of my freinds
Dude the drive is still great, best firmware support. :cool2:
Samsung is a lot worse. Many discs simply won't read. ;)
BTW: Do Lite-ON drives auto-retract?My LG writer doesn't but I remember that an old CD-ROM did.

I have been using a lite-on CD writer since 2 years, and I must say I have had no prob with it(tray or performance), and I have used it extensively, that was the only optical drive in my comp until a coupla days ago, I bought a Lite-On DVD ROM drive(SOHD 16p9s) well cant tell anything abt the DVD ROM drive right now coz its too new...and abt the drive retracting thing, well it does happen with my Writer when I keep the tray sticking out for a long time, but never had my tray stuck half way thru...so Quad, I think theres nothing wrong in going with Lite-ONs

@ undertaker,

in any optical drive there are two switches / signals.
one is the Close position and the other Open position.
now initially when the tray is "IN" the microprocessor gets a "close" signal and the normal read / write operations of the CD drive is enabled.
When you press that front button, this forces the motor control ic to slide open the tray. only when it slides open fully the "open" switch is triggered and an "Open" signal is sent to the microprocessor. when in "open" state , the read / write operations are disabled.
now in ur case what is happening is that when you press the front button. the tray starts to slide out and the "close" signal is disabled. but since the tray does not open fully the "open" signal is never trigerred and received by the microprocessor within the allowed time.
the drives are programmed to recognise this as an "error State" and it tries to "close" the tray to get out of this error state. This is ur auto-retracting phenomenon when the tray is semi-opened.
You mentioned that you "cleaned" the drive ....??? how did you do it. Did you remove the covers and cleaned the gear assembly of the tray.??

if you did then ur warranty sticker is ruptured and warranty "Null and Void".
if you just cleaned the grooves beneath the tray and applied some "good" grease then you have a good chance of getting it replaced.
cleaning the gear assembly inside the drive will solve the problem most of the times.
In Recent Times The lite-on Drives are more prone to be affected by Dust. The tray Drive mechanism, the lens and the disc drive motors are more easily affected by dust then it was before.

i dunno the reason but it could be that many "fake" or "imitated" models (very cheap, Chinese Cottage Industry ones) are being Dumped here.
My Lite-on Drive had Screwed up too about 6 months ago. The Dealer sent me a Samsung TSS model (some Toshiba / Samsung joint collaberation). it works very well. although it is a bit slow initially (recognising the discs etc...) but it works very well and more importantly is very reliable. (atleast so far ...)
BTW , i Got the new Sony 800 U model 2 days back. it can read/write -R/W discs etc.... i do not understand all this +r/w , -r/w stuff but the faceplate (White) of that drive is very good. Got it for Rs. 3650 /- fron Singapore. it came with 10 dual layer discs free.

Appolyon , one of the members here is the optimum person who can comment on the performance of the various optical drives here. hey Appo, how is this Sony 800 U performance wise ....????

Should i install it and retire the samsung Writer to the backup m/c ???

Sony 800U seems to be a new DVD Writer from sony , as i have only heard about 7XX Series from Sony.

Edit Added Later
My Samsung 12X CDWriter died a month ago after serving me for 4yrs without probs.

i have a CD writer and a DVD both from samsung ......and both are dead .....the DVD works sometimes but the cd writer is totally dead and comes out only if it is in mood ....... anyways i also tried to clean them and found there was some problem in the openning mechanism and it can't be rectified with cleaning i think that part sud be replaced ...... but they have serviced me around 2 years .....who can ask more from a 1500bucks device ....:)

check if the tray is broken....i had somewhat same problem...once i got sooo frustrated, i kicked the tray hard...didnt know it was cracked..

anytime i open, it opens only a bit, then i had to pull it...when going in, it gets stuck in between..had to push it....

knew it was a crack, pressed the 2 parts, they joined togetther...quickfix.

I'll probably get the drive changed in a week or so.Its probably dust jamming the tray somewhere but I would rather not open it in any case.Let the buggers do their dirty work.
Hopefully I'll get a new model as a replacement. :cool2:
