I think TE should deactivate accounts that are not used for more than 3 - 6 months and also knock of the reps for the people who reffered them i think its a scheme to get reps.

:) Cheers!

If you see TE has 7k members now and only 1,500 are active thats some wierd statistics in my opinion. Try filtering your users TE, you guys are doing a wonderful job already hope my two cents helps!

1.5k active in the last 30 days

that doesn't mean only 1.5k were active on TE since the last 1 yr or entire TE lifetime.

and also, not all ppl login and make posts

lot of em browse the forum without loggin in..but the stats do not show that.

i dont think its a good idea to delete those accounts.

thats why i said 6 months all those who dont come online......or even a year do you have the stats of that?

how many accounts have not been used in a year or 6 months?

lol think about people who are away from the site for 6 months or so. Immediate examples that come to my mind would be bosky and radon. Both quality members and staff. Now imagine pruning the membership of such members. Wouldn't you be pissed off to find your old membership terminated cause you were busy with your personal life for sometime ? And anyway i look at your suggestion, terminating/pruning membership is a very discouraging thing imo.

Let me show why this logic is flawed :

I joined TE in May, made a introductory post and vanished for six months or so, i became so called 'Active' member only in December. Until then all my needs for tech related info on TE were well served by browsing TE Offline as a guest. Lets just say i was 'Passive' member of TE.

So, according to your logic my account should have been deleted, or maybe TE should have sent me a mail saying 'Log-in or Log-out Forever'. Now, that would have been way too harsh & would have meant that i would have lost all the respect i had for TE and its members.

Folks have variety of reasons to browse TE as a guest or not log in, now we cannot put a gun to their head saying you must be active or we disable your account.

Solution :

So the only alternative way we see to make guests log in is by making certain features/sections of TE only visible to Members, that would make sure our 'Active Members' list reflects the true database of members who browse TE regularly. Also, that would not annoy folks or drive them out of TE for good.

But one moot point in all this is we have not yet achieved a milestone say 10k+ members, only after that we would even think of closing sections down for guests until then we have to be patient and not attach too much importance to 'Active' members list, which in no way represents all the members(regular+guests) who browse TE.

To sum it up :

So all in all, its the members who make or break a forum, if we at TE have good content then rest assured we would have more members and 'active' ones at that.

To sum it up, we would not delete any accounts for any reason, whatsoever.

PS: To everyone - Thanks for your feedback, just because we disagree does not mean we don't value your feedback. Closing thread. If anybody thinks otherwise please PM me or any one of Mods on the same.

It is not a good idea entirely... because some people (Kumar used to be one of them) live in hostels and cannot access TE. They only do so when they have hols. There are many others who show up every once in a while. Decide on a bigger time frame - say 2 years. Anyone who does not login in that period can be sent an email asking him to visit the site if he wants to continue being a member. If he doesn't respond, then cancel membership.

and 1.5k active among 7k total is not a flawed conversion rate btw. Its as good as it gets for most big forums. You can't expect everyone who registers to hang around. Most people come when they need something(eg want to buy a new computer) and then don't normally come back untill they need something again. eg FansofRealityTV.com has total memberbase of 40k, with 3k active. thats as good as you can expect. (median) for that member base

The idea is to keep them informed about us and thats where newsletters come in. The TE newsletter as you notices is not for regulars anyway. Just to give an example, after last nights nl, the members logged in has gone from 320 to 390(past 24hr stats) even if we got the 70 guys(old timers) to come back, we have achieved our purpose.

Not everyone has the time to come everyday, for that matter every week, that hardly means you delete those people.
