A TOUGH CHOICE - bsnl dataone vs cable internet

Hi everyone,

It has almost been a month that i have been using dataone broadband internet connection plan 500 on my destop

computer. I took initially plan 500 (which has datacap of 1 GB/month) to test bsnl services. I m pretty satisfied with it. Plan 500 has speed of 256 kbps and datacap of 1 gb and costs rs 500 monthly.

Now I am in a dilemma. From last two years I was having cable internet which is unlimited monthly package and costs rs 750 and has speed of 64 kbps (claimed where actual is 40 kbps).

Now I am in a fix as I really love now the speed of bsnl dataone with no downtime in last one month I have been using it. Downloading any software or browsing multiple pages simultaneously is fast, easy and hassle free.

The main questions is:

Q. SHOULD I surrender cable internet and go for a higher plan of dataone (as my requirements are more than present 1 GB cap per month) ??????????

However, surrendering cable internet would mean that I am relying soloely on bsnl (a govt service which i fear). Also getting cable internet reinstalled at a later stage would be tough should there be a need.

What is ur advice / opinion / suggestion ????

Have u experienced any down time with dataone bsnl in ur city (i am from kolkata) if yes how long and how frequent???

What alternative plan u keep should ur primary ISP is unavaiable at any time???????

(I am looking for either home 1000 or Business 1200 plan....plz see the following link http://www.bsnl.co.in/service/dataone_tariff.htm )

Plz feel free to express ur opinion as I have to decide on this really fast as bcz due date for cable internet advance monthly bill is two days away.

thanks and regards,

sunando

hey !
i was also wanting to go for this connection from BSNL. how much is the 1 gb limit. did you only surf. wht was the approx download speed.

I dont know about download speed but it was faster than cable internet for sure (and cable internet is a pain in ...)

ALSO one more thing...sometimes i do visit XXX sites and pornography for clips / stories / movies etc...do u think accessing such sites with bsnl dataone would be risking...does the Government monitor (like communist chinese government does) bcz with my cable internet there is no issue as regards this...?????

Dude check out other ISPs in ur town...................U surely wud be having quite others.... Its in a way commiting suicide bcoz u urself are saying that u download quite a lot

BTW where do u stay.............U can try out SIfy coz recently he changed the wiring in the whole of Hyderabad(my location) and now the connection is simply Rocking....What i mean is there could be plans to change it all over............FranklyHad a few problems b4...........Also there is Hathway to boot( if it is there in ur town)......Where do u stay???

All in All find out another ISP dnt take a hasty decision  :cool2:

ANd BTW i fell 750 for 40 kbps (acc. 2 u) is a bit too much u shud bargain or threaten that fellow that u will get another connection..if he is a Local ISP which i feel so.......

I am in kolkata and here sify is very bad in terms of speed and to my knowledge no re wiring done...

hathway i think has not yet reached kolkata...

"ANd BTW i fell 750 for 40 kbps (acc. 2 u) is a bit too much u shud bargain or threaten that fellow that u will get another connection..if he is a Local ISP which i feel so......."

they officially claim 64 kbps and informally admit that its maximum 40 kbps that too sometimes; most of times its just 32 kbps...

yes 750 bucks is too much for even 40 kbps...

Now I am in a position to negotiate with bsnl and others being in line...(not previously though)...

thanks for ur info man...

regards

anyday for cable net.....u get lan wher u can transfer with other users at MBps speed and u can play games on lan. currently with exatt isp. very satisfied with service.
btw sify cannot be considered cable net.....they are money leechers...u get only 100 kBps lan speed and unlimited conn. download caps and what not.

BSNL DataOne sucks and I haven't used it for a minute! So how am I making this claim?Coz the bloody rascals were supposed to be here in March(Ghaziabad) but to date they still say "We will call in a week".
Looks like I will get freedom from NB (Narrow-Band) only when I reach the land of the free! ;)
Till then its hell with a 32-48 Kbps conn. with 50% or more downtime and 600 bucks per month. :@
Also if ur BSNL line goes down frequently(as it does in many areas),ur DataOne conn. will too and u won't even get the satisfaction of abusing the cablewallah for it.

hmm the only problem with taking bsnl/mtnl adsl connection is that the speed would reduce as you go further away from the point from where the connection is provided.. like my house is 6 km from the the point .. so i was told upfront that i wuldnot get speeds of 256 kbps but in the range of 144-160 kbps.... hmmm which is saad.. :(

144-160 is quite fast as well mate.

but what option / alternative / choice we have...?????????

any idea ???????? :ashamed:

Just go for the hours pack, if there is no unlimited hours package available, then look for another ISP. lol.

Well i have a local cabe wallah 50 hour pack which i use at home and i have a BSNL DATA one 256 Home plan at office with unlimited downloads till june end... I download there and i do casual surfing here...

I believe that is untrue.... i think the entire fault lies with the quality of the exchange in your area..
I aint that good with this stuff, but a friend into networking says that since it is on the same phone line, all they(BSNL) have to do is enable the ADSL facility(or something) at the line exchange place...its just that they do not have good quality stuff (which also attributes to the fact of getting slow dial-up connections).
p.s. anyone with networking knowledge about this plz tell me if its true.....
@Switch: well, you are lucky.....

Damn!! How'd he make it in 1gb with a 256 - with this speed i'd easily cross 2 gb's in a week! excluding uploads! man cheers to the guy who survived this prison of data cap of a gig, you're a true hero :cool2:

"Haha, maybe he's not a heavy downloader"

Had you signed up for BSNL DataOne much earlier (before March 31st to be precise), you'd have enjoyed unlimited downloads till June 31st. I had signed up for the plan and have been enjoying the net ever since! BSNL's DataOne is surprisingly reliable as well, considering its a govt company- very few downtimes so far. The only problem is i've been running out of stuff to download ;)
One downside is, though their network seems to be fairly stable, their staff is technically very deficient - for starters, as per my desired User ID they made a typo in the spelling (not to mention they assigned the correct user ID to my email account and the incorrect ID to my net connection - i was breaking my head wonderin why mail was working and not the net connection)! Also the guy who came over to "install" the connection was honest enough to admit he knew nothing about installing hehe. He left everything and went, luckily it wasnt too difficult for me to get everything up and running within 5 mins. When the chap came home a few days later to complete the install, he undid everything I had set up, or even worse interchanged the connectors and what not :P
Though its been a fun ride, unfortunately June 31st is only another 2-3 weeks away :( I do wish all of em would just reconsider these hopeless download limits.

^^ That's the case even with Airtel/Touchtel.

So because of some stubborn virus that won't go away, i had to reinstall everything - including windows - that mean formatting C drive which in turn unistalled my modem. i didn't have the setting to the drivers to install the modem on the new windows so i called up a tech from touchtel to install the drivers for me, the this kinda' sad looking yound guy came and after observing his computer knowledge made me regret calling him, would've been better off buying and asking the modem drivers and settings. So the guy couldn't get throught some probelems he told me i'd have to wait another day for a better tech to come, just asked him if i could have the drivers and setting, and right after 5 mins he left i called touchtel up to state i don't need no tech support anymore. (Stupid guy, didn't even come back to take his driver CD back :hap2: )
really surprised why these guys have no simple knowledge of installing drivers, didn't they train them before employing ?
