Hey everyone!

This is the follow up thread of my earlier thread. So basically, I am now looking to get an almost new used car ( I have a budget around max 4L now...should I go for some new car instead? )

As of now, I have these option:
1. January 2013, Beat PS :
The owner installed a music system, central locking, fog lights and few other simple extras on top of it. I checked out the car, its in good condition, 10K Kms done..although the car's meter is faulty as of now and owner tells me it will be replaced today under warranty. There was some problem with ac as well, and they said, the AC's wire connection came off when they got their fog light fitted a few days back and this will be fixed as well.

2. May 2012, Hyundai i20 sports:
This is the guy..haven't really seen the car or talked too much about it with him. But I guess this is certainly an option. How much should I be paying for his car?

3. Fiat Linea Diesel Active

4. 2010 Hyundai i20

5. Honda City iVtech 2011

6. Vento 2011: 4.2L

What do you think?

Any input and suggestions are welcome. I am from Kolkata, West Bengal.

Thanks!

Its the Beat PS petrol i assume. Decent quote really. The guy is basically taking a 1 lakh hit for usage of around 6 months. Try to make it a flat 3 lakh and you have got a brand new car for almost 60 % of the normal price. 10 k kms is nothing really and It should have that new car smell.

Do check the service history for all the niggles. It seems the guy has installed the aftermarket fog lights from some road side pappu which is interfering with the other electricals.

Its the petrol version, the minimum he will go is 3.2L actually..and yea, he installed fog lights from a local shop and I guess hence the issue :P

In the mean time, the Fiat Linea Diesel Active is ready for 3L ( jaunary 2011 car, in good condition) ...and there is this 2010 Hyundai i20 that one guy is selling for 3.25L that seems interesting.... I only have 2 days to decide and it seems tough :( , I am edging towards Beat PS Petrol since its 2013 car and I should be able to sell it off when needed at not so much loss.

What do you think?

Steer clear of the Beat. Cars catching fire in India are almost always because of morons tampering with the electricals by installing third party fog lights etc. And, a lot of car manufacturers will void your warranty if they find out the electrical system has been tampered with.

Shit..is it? If there any way to find out if the electricals has been repaired properly and the car is still in warranty or warranty is void or anything? I was hoping it would be a small issue and would be fix without any problems...should I just get rid of the fog lamps all together? would that make it safe?

You can ask a Chevy dealer in your area. But AFAIK they will void the warranty. Removing it might do, but they would have most likely cut/spliced wires.

Dont think he has tampered with the electricals per say eddy. He may have installed the fog lights from the service center itself as Chevy gives it as an option in their official accesories list. The wiring wont really interfere if done competently[which i doubt if he is having problems so soon]. I do agree that inefficient wiring may lead to electrical mishaps.

@mutant
If you are concerned about the wiring mate, remove the foglights altogether and get yourself a new one from the dealer itself. This would give you piece of mind. Also go to a competent mechanic and check whether the wiring of the headunit and speakers is good as well.

The warranty thing is not that big a deal really. For installing the fogs in the beat, i dont think the guy has cut any wires. Afaik the warranty will stay i am damn sure.

^ Yeah if its installed by the service centre its ok, but he mentioned above that it was installed at a local shop. Car manufacturers these days are pretty fussy and when problems show up, they will look for any excuse to void the warranty. If the AC is already facing issues, I'd be worried with what sort of hack job they've done.

If there are features you need, look for the variant that comes with those features straight from the factory. And if you're not too experienced with judging the condition of a car, most manufacturers now have pre-owned cars - Chevrolet mentions it on their website too.

Cool..I think I will remove the fog light all together and may be re-install a proper one from the dealer... and yea, as of now, he installed the fog lights from a local vendor cause of the cost difference n all...so best, I would get it removed and fix a proper one from dealer itself.

Also, have a look at the original post, I have added some more options, these are also in my mind and confusing me a bit...is there any thing there worth looking at?

Whats the odo reading on the Ivtec? Depends a lot on that and also the service history.

I do still prefer a 6 month old car as my first one though. Just sayin. Would stay clear of the Vento due to high ASS costs and higher charges with regards to parts.

Ivtec is like 22,000 KMS on the odo.
And I guess, vento is out then...

Decent price then for that kind of mileage, especially if it is in good condition and the owner has kept the service directory clean.

Try to make it 4 lakhs if possible. I do still give the beat a go ahead since its a new car and the cost of ownership would be low. City is a tempting alternative if you wish to go the sedan route. The ASS provided by Honda here is top notch according to a few friends who swear by its brand.

This guy won't budge from 4.5, so I think I will have to drop the idea...

finally its between
Linea Active Jan 2011 diesel 28,00KMS 3.1L
Beat PS Jan 2013 petrol 11,000 KMS 3.2L
Hyundai i20 July 2010 petrol 22,000 KMS 3.25

I would keep the car for say 2 years and I believe it will see a maximum of 20,000 KMS of usage. I will sell it off after that and buy a new car. Somehow Linea Active still appeals to me being a proper sedan and good looks, being diesel n all. i20 is a classy hatchback and looks good on road. i20 and Linea will also have to incur some extra loss cause of tax running out n all around 2015. In terms of looks and feel of a car, I guess everyone would agree that Linea >~ i20 > Beat.

For me in terms of pure car performance and appeal is concerned then i would say hands down Linea with the i20 coming a close second and then the humble Beat.

But, the hassles, the cost of ownership, the ASS headaches would be in a similar lineup as well.

Linea > i20 > > >Beat

And as for the future scenario, it makes more sense to go for a cheaper option now if at all you are going to sell it off and get a new car. I think if you give the Beat a chance, it might just surprise you a little bit.
The i20 would give you the best resale value imo.

Drop me a pm if you wish to discuss further.

I have a beat but out of those options, I would get the i20 hands down. You will get the lowest hit in price when you sell it after 2 years. Spacious and decent to drive as well (apart from the vague steering). BTW, I bought the Beat PS in december 2010 for 3.55 lacs on road, so the price seems a bit steep to me.

Goes without saying though that get the car thoroughly inspected by a mechanic as well as by the company workshop if possible. A lot of times dealers sell used card with tampered odometers.

Ah..I see, but I guess the price of Beat PS now is like 4.2L on road.. but yea, i20 looks like a good option...and all of these are from individuals, no dealer involved...but I will get them checked n all.

Get the I-vtec! Keep it as long as you want!

It's hard to look away from the Linea as well, especially, if it is just for two years of prospective ownership.

I also think the price quoted for the 11k run Beat PS is a bit steep. Huge discounts are currently on offer on the petrol Beat. Make a dash to the nearest showroom before taking the plunge. Oh! and just for the records, the OE fog lights costs a whooping 7-8k. The PS is too barebone and boring from the inside. Been using one since Oct,2010. Its not very pleasurable to drive this car in Kolkata traffic and road conditions. City drivability is certainly not up to the mark.

I;m afraid of the used i20! It is a premium hatchback, don't expect cheap A.S.S. and spares. Hyundai upkeep is relatively costly. I would take a chance on the FIAT A.S.S. instead. The Linea is reason enough for that. A petrol i20 is relatively sluggish and wont return vey good FE either.

I-vtech looks like a good option...but the guy won't budge from 4.5L and that is more than what I am willing to invest right now :(

Also, apart from that 2010 i20 3.25L, 22,000kms Magna model , I just got these 2 options as well ( all from individuals, no dealers)
0. (Earlier option) 2010 i20 3.25L, 22,000kms Magna model
1. 2010 i20, Sportz model, driven around ~8000km for 3.6L
( the owner lives near my place and he has like 3-4 big cars in his home and bought this for light travel across city, but never really used it much, its condition is pretty good)
2. 2011 i20, Sportz Model, 27,500KMS drive for around 3.6L

Which one of these 3 i20 makes more sense? Also, the best of this vs Linea at 3.1L, which one would be best? ( My usage will be mostly light city travel and occasional weekend getaways ) And as of now, yea I am looking to drop the Beat PS ( it really was boring from inside, and they have this custom central locking done on the car, which turns on and off every-time I start engine and makes sounds...that just sucks..)

For the i20 at sl.no.1 above :
Known owner, low ODO reading, decent pricing, filled to the neck with electronics and features, premium interiors, class leading fit and finish, decent space on offer, worry free (albeit expensive) H.A.S.S.

Against the i20 at sl.no.1 above :
Not the best driver's car out there. Below par handling, vague steering(though good for city puttering), tad underpowered, known niggles(steering rattles, poor A.C., etc.), sub-par fuel efficiency, expensive upkeep, still a hatch.

For the Linea :
A proper sedan, robust built, national diesel engine in an optimal state of tune, delight to drive, diesel economy, looks (subjective), still under warranty, quoted price.

Against the Linea :
Tata A.S.S.!!!
Then the others : below par interiors, poor fit and finish, not as new as the i20, unknown owner, needs a thorough service history check.
