Monarch Computers has started taking pre-orders for

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4XXX+ Dual-Core 512K Per Core 90nm (939) cpu's

http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=M&Category_Code=amddc
ETA is 16/06/05.

The current pricing being as follows

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Dual-Core 512K Per Core 90nm (939) (ETA 6/16) ------------ $579

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Dual-Core 512K Per Core 90nm (939) (ETA 6/16) ------------ $619

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Dual-Core 512K Per Core 90nm (939) (ETA 6/16) ------------ $822

IMHO , the prices are very high.unless these prices come down to $250 ~ $400 levels i would not even think of purchasing it.

@ these Current prices you could built a complete kick-ass venice core system with a high end graphic card.

Intel , on the other end is getting very aggresive with its pricing of 64 bit single and dual core cpu's.

soon cheap 64-bit Celeron cpu's with 256kb cache and 533 fsb, Socket 775, are going to be introduced in the Retail Channels.:O

Okay , Amd dual core cpu's are far superior to Intel's in most of the gaming and other applications but if the prices are not reduced to affordable levels these would be "Dream" products like high-end graphic cards. everybody dreams of owning it but very , very few persons buy it.

I understand Amd's pricing strategy. if they reduce the prices of X2 dual core cpu's then What will happen to their current line of single core amd64 cpu's (venice & San Deigo) ????

I reckon we should expect ,in the near future , some really good deals on the sub- 4000+ amd64 cpu's. meaning not only in the pricing but also in deliberate under clocking of high end single core cpu's to 3000+ ~ 3500+ levels (Remarked) to meet the demand.

4000+ and above will be exclusive to dual core cpu's.

but a sub-4000+ x2 cpu will be sweeter ......hehe

amd's dual-core pricing is more to do with the capacity they can produce .. which is low and hence the high-prices. intel on the other hand can be more agressive with the higher production capacity on their side.

Well, I think AMD's capacity shud be upgraded soon, and they are trying to set up new units, but that will take time.
If only AMD had more capacity, then there wud be REAL competition in the mkt, with both AMD and Intel forced to cut prices, make better products etc.

I just hope they dont team up and rig the prices as the memory companies did!

I don't think they are worth it. The prices are never going to come down and in India they will never fall below 30k. Look at the FX series the cheapest FX-51 was 24k, way expensive. The one to buy will be the 3700+ San Diego for people building new systems in one or two months and from what this post says, its a OC'ing dream !

someone correct me if i'm wrong but aren't dual core cpu useless unless software supports it?
ie video encoding in divx 6 takes about the same time on x2 as on say comparable single core procs

Absolutely, software needs to be programmed to take advantage of multiple cores. At the moment a very marginal amount of software does that, and certainly not the vast majority of games.

However if you are multi-tasking, thats where the benefits show through regardless of whether the software is optimised for multi-processors or not, as windows will have an extra core to assign application threads to - similar to how HyperThreading helped multi-tasking.

dont u feel since single cores of amd are cheaper the dual core must be also the same amount ???? like Pentium D has its 820 for just rs. 15k

The Dual cores of AMD are priced more than Intel coz' AMD is making enough profits selling the AMD Athlon 64 series. They are planning to manufacture that as long as possible. Introducing the Dual core at that price will mean that the AMD 64s will sell less.

So, they introduced the high end range. Now they are making money in both the segments.

Intel on the other hand were losing heavily in the mid-range bracket(around 200$). So, they introduced a dual core as soon as possible as an alternative to the PrescHOtts.

After sometime AMD will release their cheaper dual core CPUs also.

And the AMD X2 beat the Intel by a fair margin. So, it is natural that they are also more expensive.

And AMD have 3 different CPUs present in the high end segment. The 4200+, 4400+, 4800+. So in the high end segment, they have things pretty much wrapped up.

what they are doing is very clever and smart. Intel have a very small chance of fighting back... but let us see......

I predict that within 3-4 months a 3700+ or 4000+ San Diego (Single Core) with Unlocked multiplier will be available for 10k to replace the existing 3200+ Winchesters and the newer Venices...

C'mon man I am seriuos, the existing Athlon 64 series will be phased out soon or else who will buy the SD and the FX series and on top of all that the X2's ?

I think AMD will have to lower prices once Intel's 64-bit CPUs hit the mainstream...
The P4 6xx series v/s the 4000+ San Diego, very interesting battle !

Why are you still joking??? I told you this is a serious discussion.

Seriously --- Cummon Anish..... I have no idea where you got such a wild idea..... I mean, I am not able to think if a single reason supporting your argument.....

IMPOSSIBLE!!! There is no way you can get a 3700+ or 4000+ for 10K. IMPOSSIBLE!!!!

and the P4 6xx series has already been released........ I cannot understand what 6xx vs 4000+ SD you are talking abt..... the 6xx was released ages ago...

Ok, lets get it clear. I say we will have San Diego's selling in India for 10-12k (The current price of a 3200+ Venice) in 3-4 months...

Next, I am talking of the P4 660 processor supporting 64-bit. It is priced at about 30k or so but performs as well as the SD currently priced at 20k, Intel pricing again. Hope you got my point Nikhil !

There is a 64 bit 630 running at 3.0 GHz. It is for around 1K more than 530 3.0 GHz. So, if 3.0ghz is 8K, then this 64 bit CPU is 9K.

Got it???

Now what???
