It is confirmed that AMD has changed its mind for the second time and will launch the Radeon HD 6000 Series on 22 October 2010. The launch was initially slated for 12 October but was pushed back a week to the 19th prior to this. Fudzilla has also confirmed that the Radeon HD 6000 Series will launch on the 22nd.

AMD will be releasing the Radeon HD 6870 and Radeon HD 6850 cards first. Based on previously leaked benchmarks by some Chinese websites, the Radeon HD 6870 will only be a little faster than an overclocked Radeon HD 5850. There sure is some name-play going on here; the x800 naming convention has traditionally been given to high-end single GPU cards but it seems that the Radeon HD 6870 and HD 6850 will be replacements for the current HD 5700 Series instead.

It is almost certain that the new high-end (wow, confusing) will be labelled under as the Radeon HD 6900 Series instead.

22nd October launch for AMD Radeon HD 6870 and HD 6850; retail availability expected by VR-Zone.com

6870 only slightly faster than a oc'ed 5850 ? Well .... damn ... thats pretty dissapointing but not a suprise since this was really meant to be 6770. Wonder what it will be priced at , if it costs as much as a 5850 does now good. Nothing to get excited about till the 480 beater gets here I guess.

Nah no chance ..... but see thats exactly the kind of reaction AMD want ... ppl will go ZOMG 6870 17-18K !!! buy buy buy ....

Nope definately no to 17-18 K !! They might bring it at 13-14 !! There Counterpart GTX460 retails around that ! So primarily pricing at that levels is definate no !! Might price arnd 15K initially coz they might have to recover all there R&D expenses !!

AMD Radeon HD 6850 Specs, Pricing Surfaces
AMD's latest graphics processors is just around the corner, and one of the first of them is the Radeon HD 6800 series. The value version of it is the Radeon HD 6850, its most probable specifications have surfaced. To begin with, HD 6850 is based on AMD's new Barts GPU, built on the 40 nm process. The source mentions that the SKU will have 800 stream cores enabled, from earlier reports we're lead to believe that these stream cores are individually more complex than AMD's traditional 5D (4 simple + 1 complex) approach to unified shaders. There is a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface holding 1 GB of memory, the card uses 5 GT/s memory chips, so the memory should be clocked around 1200 MHz (or 4800 MHz effective), if not more. The core is clocked at 775 MHz. Its FOB (freight on board) price is expected to be US $175. Power is drawn from a single 6-pin PCI-E power connector, the draw is expected to be less than 150W. Partners have the option of using a premium blower-type cooler, or a cost-effective heatsink-type cooler. The latter had been pictured a while back, posted below for reference.

So the HD6850 is a direct competitor to the GTX460 768MB and the HD6870 which is pitted against the GTX460 1GB is expected to be priced at $250 (These are whay below the launch MSRP of HD5850~$300 and HD5870 ~ $400).

Frigging AMD not only dropped ATI brand but changed the naming conventions too  They are expected to launch a HD6890 and a HD69xx series too later in the year or early next year. So the HD68xx is indeed a Juniper successor albeit with a different name rather than HD67xx series.

So my guess is the HD6850 to be priced at ~10-11k mark and the HD6870 at 14k-15k mark. Hope they beat the GTX460's by a decent margin so that there is price war :)

Rumoured HD 6800 performance leaks out

The first rumoured performance details regarding AMD's Barts-based HD 6800 series have leaked online, and although these numbers are far from being confirmed, they do make sense as the upcoming HD 6800 series ends up marginally slower than the HD 5800 series and a bit faster than Nvidia's GTX 460 card.

The first results are coming from XFastest website and show the performance of both the HD 6870 and the HD 6850 in 3DMark Vantage and 3DMark06. The HD 6870 scores P16270 and 19480 which is a bit slower than the previous HD 5800 generation. When compared to the GTX 460 (256-bit 1GB), even the HD 6850 (Barts Pro) ends up faster.

This does make sense as due to the new, unconfirmed, AMD naming scheme. Basically the upcoming Barts HD 6800 series should replace the Juniper based HD 5700 series while the Cypress HD 5800 replacements, Cayman based cards, should come a month later.

These preliminary scores show that the Barts based cards feature impressive performance and certainly have a bright future. Clearly, that the upcoming Cayman-based boards and the dual-GPU Antilles card will certainly look just as good. The mentioned naming scheme might bring a certain level of confusion to the market, but in the end, it will still follow the good old, "higher number is a faster card" theme.

some rumour going around that the next gen ati cards will be very good at tesselation which is the one thing nvidia cards are good at this time around ...

Yup this was the first leaked news about these cards. Now its almost confirmed it supports HDMI 1.4 and Blue Ray 3D :)

AMD HD 6000 features get detailed

A new set of leaked slides that have showed up over at Chiphell have revealed some details regarding the feature set of the upcoming Radeon HD 6000 series cards. As it was rumoured a while back, it is now pretty much confirmed that both Barts and Cayman boards will have support for up to six displays, thanks to DisplayPort 1.2 outputs.

The secret behind it is the MultiStream feature of DisplayPort 1.2, that has double the data-rate of DisplayPort 1.1. In addition to the higher data-rate, DP 1.2 also brings support for higher resolution support and support for stereoscopic 3D. The new HD 6000 will be able to support up to six DisplayPort displays by "daisy chaining" them to two Displayport outputs. The best part for AMD is that they can use Evergreen (Eyefinity 6) reference boards for this one since Barts and Cypress are pin compatible.

The rest of the outputs include HDMI 1.4 output for 3D video (Blu-ray 3D) support, and two dual-link DVI-I outputs. The slides also reveal that we can expect increased performance in every segment and AMD's UVD 3.0 video processing engine for GPU acceleration.

well the point here is the lower power consumption without much compromise in performance as well as some new set of features.

The cards seem good, just dont understand why they named them that way.....the barts xt had 960 shaders IIRC,so should be as fast as the HD 5850,at $200,would be a nice deal, will bring down GTX 460 prices and the launch of a new card with full GF104 chip,i hope...

HD 6850 at €189, HD 6870 at €255
Thanks to early listings of HD 6850 we can see initial pricing and confirm the clocks that were already leaked a while back. The listing, which was noticed by the guys from Dinoxpc.com, comes from Dutch based e-tailer and shows Sapphire's HD 6850 and HD 6870 cards.

The HD 6850 works at 725MHz for the GPU, comes with 1GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 4000MHz and is paired up with a 256-bit memory interface. The picture is unfortunately unavailable but we doubt that it will be any different than earlier pixellized cards, and partners will probably show their own versions at a later date. This one is priced at €189, which should rougly translate to US$199.99.

HD 6870 is listed at €255 and we honestly hope that US pricing upon launch will be set at $249.99 but bear in mind that these are early listings and that pricing might end up even lower.
You can check out the original post here and you can find the cards listed here and here. And yes, we stashed a screenshot just in case AMD decides to give a nice phone call to either Sapphire or the mentioned e-tailer.

AMD's HD 6800 series gets listed

Its 99% confirmed that the HD6850 will be priced $200 or slightly lower and the HD6870 at <= $ 250
