AMD Radeon RX Vega First Hands on Experience

AMD_VEGA_RX.jpg

Mumbai 12th August 2017 -- AMD Radeon India, gave us a great opportunity to have a hands on experience and tests the new AMD Radeon Vega family graphics cards. We had the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 card and the RX Vega 56 from the gaming family of GPU’s. And the big daddy card from the Pro family of GPUs the AMD Radeon Pro WX 9100 card to play with at this event.

We were mostly interested to know about the performance of Vega RX series of cards, especially about the never seen before triple fan cooler designed on the AMD Redeon RX Vega 56 card. Card looks as a long card, but man this is the shortest PCB designed Vega RX 56 seen with expectations on a GPU paired with HBM2 memory. Another interesting bit is the card is powered of 1x 6-pin and 1x 8-pin power connectors.

There were lot of roomer over the internet about the performance of the AMD Redeon RX Vega 56 card. To put all the chitter-chat to a full stop, Mr. Shatul and Mr. Amey from Toolius Tech assembled two identical AND Ryzen 1800X systems with similar specs from motherboard to RAM to monitor. Only difference was that the one system had a GALAX GTX 1070 card (not the reference one) and other was installed with the triple fan Vega RX 56.
Test system configuration -

CPU - AMD Ryzen 1800X @ 4GHz
Board - ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero
RAM - 2 X 8GB Trident Z RGB 4266 MHz
Cooler - Cooler Master AIO Master Cooler
Display - BenQ GW2765HT 27” Gaming Monitor at 2560x1440 QHD(WQHD)
OS - Windows 10

To check the true performance of the AMD Radeon Vega RX 56 card, we played DOOM on both the system at 2K resolution with all Ultra settings and using Vulkan api .

And the following pictures tell the whole story, the AMD Radeon Vega RX 56 system was giving around 145FPS where as GTX 1070 system was way behind with 117FPS.

Game play was super smooth and definitely one can clearly feel the difference the AMD Radeon Vega RX 56 card and GTX 1070 from nvidia.

And the story repeats itself on different games and all of the benchmarks we ran.

For more in-depth details and benchmarks our reviews will be coming soon .

And the AMD Radeon Vega 56 card just leaves the GTX 1070 way way far behind .. and with more upcoming driver updates this gap will only increase.

My whole experience with the AMD Radeon Vega 56 card was just amazing.

Now the whole “winning the GPU war” bottom line for AMD is that how they price these cards in India. Hope to see the prices soon.

Thanks to AMD Redeon India.

Just hope miners don't spoil the fun.
PS I will add something, Doom is a bit biased for AMD hardware.
It would be nice if you add more games, particularly titles which are not sponsered by either team.
Eg: GTA 5

This is a case of a card being pushed too high on clocks. The power consumption numbers are aweful for GP104 level performance.
