AMD to cut Sempron prices, debut dual-core CPU priced at US$345

Brandon Hill on Jul 6th, 2005 from X-bit Labs
AMD's dual-core processors offer some pretty impressive performance, but most everyone has been put off by the the insanely high price of entry. While still not cheap, AMD is said to be in the midst of announcing a $345 dual-core Athlon 64 X2 processor:

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has informed motherboard makers that the unit price (for 1000 unit lots) for its Sempron CPUs will be adjusted downward in early August, with Sempron 2500+ prices dropping more than US$7, according to sources in the motherboard industry. AMD also plans to launch a dual-core Athlon 64 X2 processor on August 1 priced at US$345, a third less than its current lowest priced dual-core CPU, the sources indicated.

Here is another article about the el-cheapo AMD CPU's...

El Cheapo Athlon X2 which will be a dual core CPU for a mere $345. Dubbed the Athlon 64 X2 3800+, it’s a typical X2 with 512 KB of L2 cache per core. Each core will continue to feature 128 KB of L1. The clock speed is lowered to 2.0 GHz which just isn’t much of a difference as the 4200+ is 2.2GHz with a 2x 512KB L2 part, so a logical conclusion would be a question asking AMD to jusify charge of $0.96 per megahertz when comparing 3800+ and 4200+.
