Mac OS An interesting comment on OS X - Or what caused you to move to OS X

"Oh, I bought a PC and this guy says the Mac is better, which I have never owned nor actually used....I'll just say mine is better because it must be, I bought it."

That's what I call ignorance, and that's what applies to a lot of comments on this article. A lot of Windows users haven't actually given Apple a "fair chance", where as a lot of current Apple users purchased their Macs out of frustration at crap like Vista (yes you fanboys, I said crap).

Saw this comment on engadget, and boy, it sure rings a bell

I moved to OS X after I finally got tired of the endless slowdowns followed by reinstall followed by slowdown cycles every 6 odd months on my windows systems...and am pleased to say that I final;ly don't have to bother with the ridiculousness of re-installs anymore

Now this may not be a bother for many people on this forum, esp students who tend to have a lot more free time at end and do not mind (even love) doing keeda-kadi on their systems, but bugged me no end

So what was your reason to shift?

PS a) Thanks for that phrase Pat (keeda-kadi), it's a pretty handy one and expresses something that's hard to describe in so few words otherwise (and no, messing around doesn't really mean the same)

b) Please don't turn this into a Windows vs OS X war thread ... It would be ironic if you flame this thread without even having tried OS X properly

General system performance, stability, no slowdown/reinstall, ease of system maintenance. I was one of those who thought macs were overpriced crap until I actually used one. Was hooked ever since.

Brought my Macbook cause it was the best bet in the 60k range. And now I run hackintosh on my PC too! Needless to say, OS X is simple, stable and gets everything done other than running games.

I had tried OSX through hackintosh , it was quite decent , but probably i was too used to linux | windows . I did run it for 2 weeks but couldnt completely get hang of the shortcuts etc

My sister although got completely hooked to it and has been using it (mainly for iLife) on her laptop ever since .

Well it won't be fair for me to say that I switched completely to OSX, as I still use Windows on my Desktop. But yeah, for the reason stated by Superczar.... the end of maintenance, re-install cycels (if not every six months, at least once every year) are no more concern for my mac. I don't remember re-installing OSX on my iBook G4. (Unless you wanna call upgrading OS as re-install). :)

... and I don't see myself re-installing OSX on my new macbook either in near future.

Macs aren't bad but there's no incentive whatsoever to switch over from Windows. And you definitely lose the entire gaming aspect on a Mac.
I'd say Windows is succesful for no merit on its part and Mac is the underdog for no fault of its own. It's just how things worked out.
"There can only be one."

superczar, you and only you seem to suffer from these problems with PC gaming (infinite driver tweaks for you) and slowdowns with Windows OS's (infinite reinstalls for you) :P.
I haven't had to reinstall Windows because of some fault of its own since a decade now. All reinstalls have been because I had changed PC's or whatever.

Same here. I have not had to do any reinstalls because of slowdown issues.

Throw enough hardware at Vista and you have no problems. Thing is Apple computers already have enough hardware to run OS X. If you run windows on crap hardware you will get crap results.

I love the OS X interface and the very decent way that it is designed in. I am even considering getting a MBP for me next. But I do not agree with the slowdown comments.

if you need to reinstall windows every 6 months something else seems to be the culprit cuz i am using the same windows since oct 2006 (my first c2d system). since then this install has been through multiple motherboards/hdds etc. i use acronis to transfer the os each time with no problems too date.

Wow, Appo, you're lucky that you didnt have to reinstall windows for 3 years now.
From what I've seen, people reinstall Windows on quite a regular basis; I've seen multiple reinstalls on just our University systems, just because they slow down over time. Now, you may say that it is because of crappy system maintenace, but it is just as easy to maintain an OS-X / Cent-OS / Solaris system.

Anyways, the last three replies are not relevant to this topic, because it clearly asks "what caused you to move to OS X", not "What made you to stick to Windows." You might be happy with what you use, but it is not the same with everyone else. I think this thread is for those who "switched" to OS X and are happy with it!

to be honest....i reinstalled win98 in my early pc usage days coz i didnt know how to clear IE cache...(obviously i wanted to clear the *ahem* footprints..:ashamed:)
bt the point is that ppl consider reinstall as the primary remedy to all their OS related issues...backup n restore works much better than xpected in windows for that matter.

that apart...

i have never experienced OSX bt im lookin forward to do so sometime in future....for now im happy wid vista n ubuntu.

I always thought Macs were overpriced and did not deserve the premium they demand. Of course, this was when I had not even used OS X. While I was in Germany, I took a close look at the MacBook (and OS X) in one of the stores and I fell in love with OS X! It was so simple and beautiful! I absolutely adored it for the fact that behind this beautiful and sexy looking OS was a rock-solid UNIX base (and I was always a Linux-guy in any case). I made a decision while I was there that my first buy after being back in India would, indeed, be a MacBook :) What also helped my decision was the fact that Vista did not live up to my expectations!

@Abhinav: It is spelt "keeda-kaandi" :P

I started using OS X because I was getting sick of the user interface of Windows XP. My Ideapad S10 cannot run Vista (although I would never subject myself to it, after encountering a number of problems and performance issues while using it on my friends' computers) and so I decided to give OS X a try. I'm happy to say I haven't looked back ever since. OS X runs boots, runs and shuts down faster than XP on this and as mentioned in an earlier post, I don't have to do any keeda-kaandi . My time is spent in using the system and not just tinkering with it.

I always wanted to buy a MacBook Pro because of the "cool" tag associated with it. People in my line of work seem more interested in what you have to say if they see you with a MBP. Now, after using the OS, I most definitely want to own one albeit with a matte screen. An option no longer available on the 15 inchers.

Types this on a T-21 which had W2k server installed in 2002, once. No slowdowns. Dont even run an anti-virus.

After the W2K era have never experienced slowdowns like in the win-9x era.

Course i'm the sole operator of this laptop, had it been shared with other more clueless ppl the story might well have been different :)

Looks like it's time to try out OS X .. :P

will a OS X installed on my current PC(ie. a hackintosh ) would be similar to a normal Mac's OS X in terms of performance and appeal ?

Thats true. I had formed an opinion about Macs even without trying them for a fair bit and I accept I was wrong at that time :) (probably many of the people here flaming and bashing Macs fall in the same category)

I believe it could be better in terms of performance!!! :hap2:

Make sure all the kexts (sort of like drivers for your peripherals, incase you did not know that) are available before you take the plunge.

Please define the usage of the word 'appeal' as used here.

Virus free, tight hardware integration (Especially with MIDI and audio devices for me), no driver reinstalls, very stable audio drivers, excellent backup app (Time Machine) and brilliant after sales (I have ACPP on both my machines).

+1. It took me 7 years to first use a Mac and 3 months once I got my Macbook to sell me desktop and move fully to OSX.

that'I'd agree with that..

There are very few people on this board who have actually used a true Mac and still hate it

As fr Hackint0sh experimenters, it's a mixed experience..for some it's a one time setup job and things are nice after that

while for others, the entire keeda kandi they have to do to make the devices work (and yet not be 100% succesful with that) takes away the whle joy of the OS X experience for them
