Anyone running their own email server?

A lot of people set up their own blogs or sites. Has anyone here attempted to setup their own email server?

Thinking of switching away from free email services, mainly so I can block IP ranges from which I do not expect to ever receive genuine mail. Lately I find the IRINN has been happily assigning IP ranges to "marketing agencies", and has no interest in supervising these ranges. Most free email services are quite good at identifying spam and filtering it to your spam box, however seeing spam accumulating in the spambox is in itself a little irritating.

Looking around I find there aren't simple one click install email platforms which is a bit of a shame. The only one I could find was Zimbra, but I hear it's very resource heavy. What alternatives are there?

Would it not be more economical to invest in something like Exchange Online and take the maintenance / monitoring headache out? Even if you do start running a in-house mail server you will run into the added expense of procuring a cleanport or subscribing to services like Barracuda.
