PC Peripherals Arctic Cooling MX-2 compound doubt!

I went ahead and bought a X3 720 BE for my m2n32-sli today. I fixed the CPU onto my mobo and used an Arctic Cooling MX-2 compound which I bought in Dec 2007. I then installed my TRU 120 heat sink and well, I was ready. When I ran the system, my CPU temp idles at 50 Deg C and on load goes up all the way into the 60's. What could be wrong ?. Could it be because I used the thermal compound which I bought close to 2 years back ?. I thought they had good shelf life. I had pasted the compound onto the CPU and not onto the heat sink. I thought that would do. Just cant figure out why the temp is so high..

Any help would be appreciated !

thick film of mx-2 or a very thin layer? u need a thin one for best results. also is the 120 screwed on firmly enough with no loose components? what abt a 120mm fan on the tru120?

ur mobo might be having really old BIOS. Most of them have trouble of high CPU thermals with modern CPUs, due to improper power management. Update to latest BIOS first and check back.

Also enable CnQ in Bios.

Fan can't be the problem. I have a scythe 120mm fan there. I re did it again and still, the temp is 50deg idle. I am on version 2208 of the bios, let me switch to 2209 and see !

Changed to the latest bios 2209 still no difference. I took the heat sink out and cleaned the base and the heatsink base and applied a new thin coat of mx-2 in "cross" format. ( I did the line and grain format earlier) but still no difference. My vcore stands at 1.38. Should i undervolt it ?
