ASUS: 10-inch Eee PC coming this year, Atom in June

Jerry Shen, ASUS CEO, is casually twisting Eee PC fans into a tizzy this morning. At the launch of the 8.9-inch Eee PC 900 in Taiwan, he uttered the magical phrase "10-inch Eee PC" for the first time. Expected sometime later this year, Shen said that the 10-inch screen will be the biggest allowed on the Eee PC. Good for you Jerry, but we've got the feeling that you've completely forgotten about the original promise of a $200, 7-inch laptop. Surely we're due for a price drop now that the 900 is out, right?

Update: Asus also confirmed that an Atom-based Eee PC will launch at the Computex show just like we heard. No details about the screen size or any other specs were provided.

This low-cost pc market is going to be a tom & jerry fight, and im sure Mr.Jerry would agree with me on that. But its sad that asus is forgetting the original price bracket of 200$, it wouldve been a steal at that price. But let the wars begin as a lot of new players like msi, ecs,hp,dell are all lining up one by one for the battle :D

Let me take a wild guess.... what could be the reason behind EeePC's increasing screen size and rocketing prices :) ? is it that selling a 9" laptop for $650 more profitable than selling a 7" laptop for $399?

Especially when there are better performing laptops available for 30K. Maybe the price of the asus eee would go down, but till then a full fledged laptop is still the better option.

I recently bought a 15" laptop. but have been increasingly thinking about getting a 12" for office work -- more portable. but a 12" laptop costs close to 50K. so a 10" asus or a 12" laptop with linux and a celeron processor for 20-30k would be great.

oh man i knew this was coming but didn't hope it wud happen this year. looks like i gotta put my ultraportable lappie plans on hold and wait for more players and models to enter the foray. lets hope the 9 incher is priced right.
