CPU/Mobo Asus MB + Old P4 Cpu

c4u

Beginner
Hi .

I have a Old P4 2.0 Ghz .. want to upgrade the motherboard with an asus one

I have a 80 gb + 20 Gb + 60 Gb Disk (ATA)

wi fi card ,cd rw plan to buy dvd writer ..

so which M/B is advisible + memory Config fro the upgrade

Thank you

It will mention the type of Socket - either Socket 423 or Socket 478 under the "Package" field in CPU-Z. Else, Socket 423 P4's are code named Williamette.

Thnx guys for the reply ... I will have to get home to get the pin config ...

Mostly i think its a 478 ... proc codename northwood ..

i called a local distrubitor and he said that asus p4p800 se or deluxe not available ...

he says he can get me the 915 chipsets frm asus .. so if i go in for the
P4GD1 from asus .. will my proc support it and whta typde and speed of memory do i

need to get to get optimal performance ... + which graphic card shldi get a mid level one .. plz recommend .. need to get the stuff on 1 of nxt mnth

915 boards are LGA 775 and won't work with ur cpu. You need something either on the 865/875 chipset or radeon chipset(I think asus p4r800 or something is the board). Whats ur budget for the graphics card?

Yep. The MOBO will support ur proccy if its a NorthWood. For memory, get a pair of 256 or 512 meg sticks and run them in dual-channel to get optimum performance. Go for the BIG 6600GT PCI-E card which costs around 8.5K.

@Eddy, didn't know that the Williamette was Skt. 423. Had one for 2 and a half yrs !!!!!

@ Chaos, the P4GD1 is a Skt. 478 MOBO.

PCI-E is what the board is based on. So where's the question of getting the 5700 :S U've to go for the 6200 TC with 256 MB max support or a 6600 Non-GT which would cost 2750 and 6500 respectively.

GeForce FX/PCX cards are POS and are useless as far as gaming is concerned. Even the TC cards are useless. The min u shud buy is a vanilla 6600 if u wanna do any sort of gaming!

DO NOT GET THE P4G -_-

First of all i have heard from lots of people it overclocks like teh shit and has very bad stability problems. And i dont see the need getting a PCI-E mobo when an AGP in this case would be better + more stable and possibly cheaper...unless your planning on upgrading to a 78GT/GTX which are only made in PCI-E pff..

478 procs. were never meant to support PCI-E

I also wouldnt reccomend an ATi chipset for an intel proccy...intel chipsets are very very good and have always worked better with intel procs.

As for a mobo I would go for the P4P-800E based on the 865 chipset..good overclocker, stable, and no too pricey.

As for a GFX card you missed out on my 5700 deal for rs1600 :D anyway...the 5700 IS OK...but it would be better to get an ATi 9xxx series card if you wanted to buy last gen card.

If you can try to get a 6200 NON-TC 128mb cards...there great for the price :D

And if you could spare the cash go for a 6600 vanilla card.

again...do not get the P4G

Please help me out here guys , since i have been out of touch in the hardware market for a year i am not able to choose the best

so as per my cpu config please remonend the following

1- Motherboard (gigabyte/Asus) with future upgrade possible to a small extent

2-Ram - type and speed

3-Agp / PCI x card for decent gameplay (somewhere between mid - high)

I have to request for a qoute from my dealear and need to assemble this rig ASAP so please help me out here

ps- i am in the middle east region so some parts may not be as expensive as india and maybe i can go in for it

thank you guys once again

Hey, Kev. Why a PC2100 instead of a PC3200 ? All MOBO's that he's looking to upgrade to will have dual channel and me thinks that a 400 MHz RAM running in dual-channel would do him more good that a 333MHz RAM.

@c4u, since u say that u want a card in the mid-high range, get the 6600GT than the 6600 Vanilla.

How abt. the Gigabyte boards based on the 865PE chipset in this page ? R any of these good ? Questions to be answered by those who have had any experience with the GB boards coz' I dunno a thing abt. these.

hey guys look at his Proc.

he is having p4A and as per my knowledge FSB for this series is different.

A series - 400 FSB
B series - 533 FSB
c series - 800 FSB

to take DDR400 he must need proc with 800FSB and DDR 333 also need P4B.
i guess his P4A will support max DDR 200 / 266.

correct me if i am wrong.
