ASUS introduces the world's first external graphics card for notebook users

ASUS today introduced a dedicated external graphics card for laptops -- the XG Station. The XG Station is an external graphics card that allows laptop users to enjoy high end graphics performance while plugged in. As the XG Station is an external graphics it can be unplugged when portability is needed.

The XG Station connects to any notebook’s ExpressCard slot and provides a PCI Express x16 slot for graphics cards. Since ASUS has opted to equip the XG Station with a standard PCI Express x16 slot, the station can be equipped with any PCI Express based graphics card: AMD, NVIDIA or even Matrox. ASUS launched the default XG Station with an NVIDIA 7900GS powered graphics card.

The XG Station is powered externally. A separate power brick plugs directly into the adaptor.

An integrated LCD display and control also grace the XG Station. The display is customizable and can display information such as frame rate, fan speed, GPU temperature and more while the control knob can change various settings of the XG Station such as the core and memory clocks.

Expect ASUS to release the XG Station in Q2'07 this year. Pricing of the XG Station is unknown at the moment.

The XG Station adaptor only interfaces with ExpressCard interfaces at the moment, but will work with with PCIe ExpressCard interfaces installed in a desktop PC.

well i think its good thing to have. Not many will be gaming on the move. But when they get home rather than use a desktop for gaming if something like this provides a good gaming experience on say ultraportables or lightweight notebooks then people might do away with the desktop totally. I think thats the point of this device. How it performs................ well time will tell

Jesus. I'll buy this if they price it correctly. I'm stuck with an integrated i945 without a pci-e slot. Just hope it performs decently : ).
LOL it would be cheaper to buy another mobo + gfx card than this...

Laptops are'nt upgradeable my friend. If they were there would be no need for devices such as these. Only some expensive dells come with pci-ex vid card slots and they retail at quiet a huge price.

If these guys manage to price this in around the 5-10k range (probably impossible, but no harm in wishful thinking) I'll go and buy one as soon as its launched.

VR-Zone : Technology Beats - ASUS XG Station; Discrete GFX For Notebooks

From the aboev link - " A full package will include the XG Station graphics docking station, one ASUS EN7900GS graphics card and assorted accessories."

So this means that the XG should be as powerful as a mid-end pc graphics card. If the 7900 is high end (forget the 8800 for a second) then the performance delivered by the XG should be around equal to that of a 7600 or maybe as low as a 7300. These are just my assumptions. They're not based on any facts whatsoever , its just a probability kinda thing.

Hell, if the XG provides 7300 type FPS for most games I'll buy it simply because it will still destroy my i945 integrated by a massive amount.

sorry for some other way reply but i will prefer Dell XPS 1710.
previously i had one in office with 6800Ultra (1.5 yrs back)
now i will have one with 7950-512MB.

i simply love that system. i know it wont give true 7950-512MB performance as it is mobile chip but still it is damn fast.wayyyyyyyyyyy better than crap 7900gs.
but still it would thrash this asus thing...

its heavy and bulky but its performance king.......
