Backup copy of PS2 DVD skips and stutters

Some clarifications before the Mods decide to dump this thread ;)

- PS2 modchips are not illegal (though there is some ambiguity regards the legal status..AFAIK, The Ozzies have declared them as fully legal)
- Burning a copy of a legally owned Game (for a backup) is not illegal (slighltly gray area as the rightful owner is my Sister, but I htink making a copy of a disc which is in the family is perfectly legal)

SO here goes:

I made a copy of my Sis's "From Russia with Love" PS2 DVD by:
- Ripped the iso using DVD decrypter
- Burned the iso on a DVD as a finalized disc using Nero on a Benq 1640

Put the CD in my modded PS2 and the game boots...so far so good...Now the problem started once the FMV started skipping badly right from the start (The MGM roaring lion)

(BTW the lens on the PS2 is just fine, nearly all other original and "ahem" games (From Palika bzr and Burma Bzr ) play perfect)

So I did a google and some good fella on the afterdawn forums had suggested that you should rebuild the iso before burning because apparently, the default iso image is burned from the outside- in so the lens has to travel a loong distance etc etc.

So to rebuild the iso:
- Used isobuster to determine the sequence of the files
- Used isobuster to extraxt all the files and folders from the image
- Used cddvdgen to create an iml file using the same sequence as on the original image
- Used the bundled iso generator (with cddvdgen) to create the rebuilt iso
- Burnt the new iso using nero

The new iso was 2.5 GB compared to 4.3 GB of the 1st copy

But unfortunately, the same skipping prob started once i staretd the game on the PS2

Any idea what could be causing this?
Te original works just fine on the PS2 (with the modchip turned off)
The "ahem" versions of other games work fine (with the modchip on)

this is my first time I have tried to make the backup of a disc so am really keen to know wht's gng wrong here

Firstly since it is a EA game the game dvd will be copy protected. So simply copying it using dvd decrypter won't emulate the copy protection. You might want to check out what protection it employs. EA's game dvds normally run a modchip detect routine so you might want to patch it in order to back-up your legal copies.

^^ don't think the problem lies there...wlese the game wouldn't have booted at all....

All PS2 discs employ the somewhat esoteric coded sectors protection mechanism which cannot be copied off during decryption/ripping ....and that protection is exactly what modchips bypass by including a stream of data at startup that fools the PS2 processor into believing that an original disc has been inserted....

If the problem would have been with the modchip detect routine, "Ahem" copies (pressed, not burnt) of EA games would not have run on my ps2 ...also, this particular (burnt ) disc would not have booted at all.....The PS2 would have just displayed an error msg asking for insertion of a PS2 format disc....

oh please, don't mess with isbuster.

Once you rip it to PC, then make sure you burn the .ISO file you ripped in Decrypter at speed 1x in ISO-WRITE mode!! The slowest possible.

And, BTW, it also depends on the media you burn it on. i use Sony's DVD-R, they work PERFECT everytime for me. Before, i used those cheap no name blank dvd for 8-10 rs each, they couldn't be detected by the ps2.

yup...it was in fact a media related proble....a quick scan on nero cd-dvd speed showed a PIM error average of 900+ which is way above acceptable.....

I'll need to get hold of decent blank media I supppose,,,,How much do Sony DVD-R come for (bundle, not th ejewel case one)
