with 450 Watts std SMPS

I don't know why but my HDDs always develops bad sectors... due I replaced 160 gb & 500 gb ... thank for good service by WD ....

recently 1 found my 1 tb is giving cracking sound . . . I dont know what is wrong with my setup ...

Is it about SPMS ? I suppose .... Do I have low power SMPS ?

I am also planing to buy one more optical drive Samsung 22x keeping old one

Please suggest good SMPS for such system .....

Or any other Solution ...

Re: Bad sectors & SMPS . . . . should I change ...?

Yes, poor quality PSUs can damage Hard drives. It has more to do with unstable power than about insufficient power. If more than one HDD has developed bad sectors, I would suggest changing the PSU for sure. A decent 400~450W PSU is more than enough for your rig. Also check if there are too many power fluctuations in your house.

thx I think I have a clean power . .. but how to verify ....

Re: Bad sectors & SMPS . . . . should I change ...?

^^ 400~450W should be more than enough. Unfortunately, I am not in touch with the current options that are available in the market. Corsair VX450 for one is a great PSU, but it might be overkill for you on price front. Wait for others to reply with more options and updated prices.

Re: Bad sectors & SMPS . . . . should I change ...?

On thing i miss to mention always Hbernate my system ... (Win XP)

Do Hibernation has any bad effect on HDD. . . .

Re: Bad sectors & SMPS . . . . should I change ...?

^ i also frequently hibernate my system with no bad sectors. So no, hibernation doesn't have any adverse affect on the HDD as hibernation simply means that the contets of the ram is saved on to the HDD as hiberfil.sys, so a basic read-write operation on the HDD.

If your are getting frequent bad sectors, then check your HDD sata cables as well, faulty cables can also be the culprit.
Also do you power off your system properly, improper shutdown is another reason for bad sector

Re: Bad sectors & SMPS . . . . should I change ...?

I got the same problem.I used a cheapo PSU from zebronics. And thats what I say to the crazy people who say that it's alright to use generic PSUs with low end PCs.My PSU failed and it failed at the power which ran into the HDD,and you know what the system didn't detect the HDD.And thats not the only thing that happened ,I got two bad sectors.I immediately changed that shit and upgraded my PSU and saved my life thats my data.

Get FSP Saga II or Gigabyte Superb in 400 to 500W range (~1.8k-2k). Both are good, stable VFM PSU's. If your budget allows, go for Corsair CX-400 (2.4k). DO NOT GET CX-430!

^^ All the power ports for HDD and optical drives are same -- SATA Power connector, you can buy the Molex-to-SATA converters for additional connectors for the hard-drives.

The CX 400W ~ has 3 SATA standard connectors + 3 Molex power connectors capping all your drives and thats just about it for the Corsair SMPS. Same case with the FSP Saga II 400W ~ 3 SATA + 3 Molex connectors (also the Saga II 400W is the OEM piece for Gigabyte Superb 460W so same wire configuration of that one too).

Q about quality of specific PSU: FSP SAGA 400 - Power-Supplies-PC-Cases-Case-Mods - CPU-Components
CPU-Components

I think you should aim for the FSP Saga II 500W ~ 2500/- if you want a decent menagerie of connectors.

Hope this helps. Also while buying a SMPS it is good to get some extra information on it like its peak rated output, stable output and efficiency rating. Weighing all this in mind it is best if you opt for the CX 400W OR FSP Saga II 500W.

Oh and if you want to purchase the FSP OR Corsair CX series via shipment here is a thread from the market section ITWares http://www.techenclave.com/theitwares/fsp-saga-ii-350w-400w-500w-169371.html

^ The pic/review shows 6 SATA + 6 Molex.

IDE HDD/ODD use Molex.

Since OP mentioned he would be using older drives, I played it safe :)

I had the same bad sectors problem with my 3 HDDs and it took me a while to realize that the cause was cheap iBall PSU that i had installed on my system. I had to get all of the HDDs replaced and change the PSU to Corsair CX400. This was almost a year back and I haven't had similar problems since then. Touch wood. ;)

i just cant understand one thing people can spend money on good cpu or mobo but when it come to psu 90% will buy cheapo stuff. why put your pc, data on risk just for few extra bugs

It's not customer's choice to get el-cheapo PSU, they always want good and best in their price segment. It's the dealer who dont know importance of PSU and max dealers provide such cheap options to us. Customer won't know the difference unless he has serious problem with it :)

The reason behind this is Most people think if system is running then why spend premium(Most PC assembled in India r in the range 15-20k).Second availability, 80-90% do not stock Good PSU in INDIA.Most Dealers have Iball,Zebronics,Intex cabinets with Psu ranging 1000-1500.For a noob when dealer told s/he has to spend 2-2.5k only on good PSU most of times they refuse and buy generic cabinets with Psu.For the first time customers they dont know advantages of 80+ efficiency, safety features, build quality etc.one solution can be Cooler master,Gigayte starts providing combo of cabinets+Psu around 2.5k range with 300W PSU.

Planning Crosior CX-400 .....
Will it be future proof for my Config means if I add GPU like HD5770 1GB GDDR5 in future along 4 HDD 2 ODD ...

.. I think those people thinks when PSU comes FREE with Cabinet why we need to throw the FREE one & Buy New at more price :)
