I have been trying to create an appointment for passport at PSK thane. I am always getting "unable to process your request, please try again later". After half an hour, I get "maximum slots (900) booked, please try tomorrow"!! Have been trying for number of days now. This is more frustrating that irctc.co.in
What are my options?

Same here, seems to be like agents would be having a field day! You try in morning it tells you try at 3:00 and at 3:00 it tell you no slots available, should have gone with the agent route!

Since the timing for Thane PSK is only 3:00 Pm it is futile to try at any other time. Each PSK has specific time for them. For Pune it is 12:00 PM and so.
Agents can get one slots and they charge money just for that. Because i believe the agents might not have a greater role to play for passport application / renewal as they did before this new process came into practice (i might be wrong here).
Btw @vaibhavyagnik, why don't you try Malad-PSK or Andheri-PSK ? You might get slots there. Might be travel for you but still better than nothing.
Just for trial purpose i tried booking slot in Malad-PSK few days back and i got for a date 3 days from the date i tried (cancelled it later).
There are probably better changes of getting a slot in any Mumbai PSK i believe.

I think PSK's are based on your location, a person staying in Navi Mumbai has only 2 options Thane or Nashik

I don't think so. People in Pune have permanent address as they home town somewhere else but they are still getting their passport applied / renewed here.
Not sure what the catch is.

AFAIK, It doesn't matter what your hometown is; what matters is where you have been staying [now or for the past one year for that matter]..

I get only two options while booking slot, PSK thane and PSK nasik. I stay at nagothane, which is 70 Km from panvel. So thane is the only option. @tommy_vercetti, could you make a visit to thane psk and see if slots can be booked manually? i.e by physically going to the PSK?

I am not sure, but I don't think it would be easy to do manual submission. Recently had to get a fresh passport for my wife from PSK Pune, and the only people they were letting through the gate where the ones who have made an online appointment slot OR have walk-in permission slips. Also, walk-in slips are available only if your application has been rejected in the past 3-4 days due to insufficient documents or if you are a senior citizen or minor or disabled person. It might be different on other PSKs though.

BTW, when I last visited Regional passport office last week to give some clarification on my application, there were some notices about the new appointment process where the appointments are booked automatically based on first come first serve basis [instead of the old method where you have to login at a specified time like 12:00 PM for Pune PSK]. Please see this :- http://www.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/pdf/New_Online_Appointment_Booking_Process.pdf

@codereverser

This happened with me. I had chosen PSK Mumbai (Malad) and i never got to pick any slots. I logged in at 3:00 PM (timing for Mumbai) and got an appointment 3 days after.
I cancelled it immediately since i had no intention to go but wanted to check the online appointment booking process. But as i said, never got slots, directly got appointment for a specific date and time.

The pune PSK has now implemented the online payment system which will provide you with a slot only after you have made an online payment of Rs2000. This has also been implemented in many other PSK's across India to avoid "No Shows".

From now one, you dont have to choose a particular date, all you need to do is to make the payment and the system will automatically provide you with the next slot. Please got through this doc at passportindia.gov.in

I live in Kolhapur. I've got passport from Pune PSK. I don't think it matters at all.
I guess the nearest PSK to Kolhapur is Pune, that's why you could get it done there.. [Please correct me if I am wrong, but putting a Kolhapur pincode in PSK website, it shows Pune as the PSK]

Yes many of the nearby Pune area (even which are like 300-500 Km away) have their PSK as Pune and hence @Rahul++ was able to get it done in Pune.
I am sure it depends on what the present address is mentioned in the application when the same is submitted online. Like when i submit my application, submit address of Mumbai so i only get option to select one of the 3 PSKs in Mumbai.
