Books for improving english

Actually I need it for my sister. She is in 1st year and lives in Bihar so you can guess how her education was. But she is good in studies and has the zeal to learn. Her main purpose is to gain more confidence. I have given her some book names to buy including Word Power Made Easy but still wanted to ask here. I have no knowledge of English learning books so thought I would ask here and find someone who has experience with it.
 
First of all. Go back to basics. Pick up that good old wren and martin and understand the basics of english. Learning through movies is a very bad way as you will be tempted to use those accents and slangs and not proper english. Find a good tutor and learn the basics, there is no age for learning. Once you get a good grip on the basics and grammar, then start building up the vocabulary by picking up english novels. Only then start learning from movies to get that zing of accents and slags
