i have a 40gb IDE laptop drive which i m using as an external drive.
lately i am not able to acess data on the drive and the drive is shown as "unallocated" (not initialized) in disk management. according to Pratition Table Doctor it say "boot sector error use fixboot". after using fixboot it says "cannot fix boot sector of partition".

now i have no idea what to do... i m downloading partition magic(hoping it may help)...if u guys have any suggestions please let me know...

thanx in adv.

OK i am guessing you are on xp ,
Right click on My Computer.
Choose Manage (This will open the Computer Management window).
Go to the Storage category and select Disk Management
Right click the new drive (usually listed as Hard Disk 1) and "initialize"
You now have the option to partition and format the drive.Do not format if you have data on it .
The default settings of Primary Partition and NTFS- Quick Format are recommended for most users.
If it initializes then ok otherwise do reply i will advise further steps . Also give in depth detail like if the hdd is assigned or not , your os etc

i hv vista on my laptop but i am unable to access the drive in vista... all that i did was on my friends PC which had xp... any advice on how i can do this on vista...??
