Breakind DSL speed.

I live in New Zealand and the DSL(we call it ADSL) here are pathentic. Its a monopoly by one company called Telecom. You can use other ISP's but the lines are property of Telecom.

The fastest ADSL speed here is 2Mbit.

However I have had my friend say that DSL lines are capped to a certain speed(e.g: 2Mbit),however he has speeds of 3Mbit because either his ISP or Telecom forgot to cap him.

So is this true?

Secondly, there are many programs that claim to speed up your internet by 300%.Do they actually work?If they do?Are there any good ones?

Because 2Mbit is the fastest DSL here and it is pathentic. When other countries are using ADSL2/2+ or optical cable.

well till 6 months back I was on 56k dialup which gave only 33k dialup speed. I been using dialup for 7 years. I am using 256kbps connx now, 2mbit aint that bad.

I don't think you can uncap ADSL modems. SDSL you could uncap though. If your friend gets 3megabit, its probably cos of some isp issue. Also uncapping is illegal so a discussion here is not gonna be allowed. Those programs do nothing but prefetching for browsing. That slows down browsing even more unless you are on a very slow line :P.

The speeds ar good in NZ But the Kiwis have it bad coz they don't get unlimited plans AFAIK...

what good is a 2mbit plan if you have to contend with a download cap of 4-5gig

I pay for the max plan. The 10 GB limit, 2Mbit plan.New Zealand is far behind compared to other developed countries in the world. We are like the top of the third world, as some people in new zealand call new zealand.

Anyway so is there anything I can do to make life better if I want to swallow 4-5GB's of work stored online?

Eh?

Your talking about NZ is behind other countries?

Wheres India then? Behind the Starting Line?

Best Unlimited Scheme here is 512 kbps..

And 1 Mbit is witha stupid 8gb cap.

And its expensive. All the plans ^^.

Im on a 256kbps with unlimited d/l. So im content :bleh:

I think you should be to. Since theres nothing you can do about it :P.

man i think he too reads from other different forums abt breakneck speeds of other countries... and as he said he`s got a limit tooo on his plans so i guess it aint no good for him....

now that i`m used to 256kbps.. iwant more... well that`s how we are aint we?

dsl speed depends on the distance from ur isp to your house, maybe your friend lives near your isp's dsl server.

VSNL broadband sux.i was staying so damn close to the server and fkin dc and monkeys didnt even know english.he talked in telugu which i didnt know.i recommend that none of u go for VSNL broadband.

dude,2mbit is more than enuf.btw, wat are u using it for??

^ one can never have enough bandwidth :P 2mbit is about 120kbps in download speed. that's nothing when compared to countries like sweden where 100/100mbit is common in homes. a guy living there who i know through irc pays something to the equivalent of Rs. 1500 per month for that speed :< we'll catch up in a few centuries.

well 1 mbps aint tht costly from bsnl here offers 40 gb b/w :D its 3300 rs i think and yea i saw in some forum they have 45 mbps download and 35 upload to be EXACT so yea i think the ata hard drives r slower than tht =))

OT: the slowest ATA 4200 HDD are like 22mBps so no way they are slower than a 45mbps/8.8mBps connection...But yes, 45mbps would be crazy fast :P

my isp gives a unlimited (no bars hold) 1 Mbps connection for Rs 4000/- pm. i had it for 2 months. downloaded my ass off. :ohyeah: :ohyeah:

But its expensive here. I pay like $60 dollars with toll calls.Without toll calls that's $70 for 10GB 2mBit.

Yeah, I am comparing New Zealand to devloped countries like Sweden or America or whatever.India is sort of between developed and developing...For example in China, you have 24mBit type of thing in cities like Shanghai or Hong Kong(different from China).
But in rural areas you have dial up or nothing.

@kidoman, yea i know. was really sleepy when i posted that :P

NZ and Australia aren't that much better than India if you ask me when it comes to the internet. the speeds are a lot better but they too have similar shit like traffic limits and high prices. this guy i know through irc living in australia has 2mbit but a limit of 10gb. If he crosses this limit, his speeds get capped to 5kbps rofl.

A relative of mine is using 2mbps dsl line (unlimited) for rs 2000 per month. Australia is far ahead than india.

256 Kbps now for 900. Another 2-3 yrs. should see us playing catch up with these guys. I just wish Reliance would enter into the fray in a big way. Then prices will drop like they did in cellular
