Well, my GF is in college now, and she needs a computer of her own to do small time work on. I'm not looking to spend too much, just enough to get her by with her needs. Here's what I decided to go with, keeping my budget around $200.. Any suggestions?

Motherboard: MSI KM4M-V Micro ATX

CPU: AMD Sempron 2400+ Thoroughbred 333MHz FSB

Memory: Kingston ValueRAM 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 333 (PC 2700)

CD/DVD
: SONY Black IDE DVD Burner Model DW-Q30A BK

Case/PSU: ASYS 8654BW Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case with 450W Power Supply

HDD: Random extra 80GB 7200RPM HDD

Total price: $217.65 USD

Edit: Newegg wishlist - https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersio...n=HISTORY&ID=1761688&WishListTitle=For+Autumn

i don't think u will need a 450w power supply with that ..... even 300w will do .....

Comes with the case, but I'm sure that power supply will fail in the near future, sending me out to BestBuy to grab an Antec. -.-

Anyways, think that's okay for the price? She won't be doing much besides MS Office 'n' such. No gaming, which saved me big in the GFX card area...

Hey ditch the PSU like rahul said...and upgrade the other components. **just saw ur post. So its ok.

OMG!!!! I also forgot abt the onboard video. Edited again. Lol. I hope she wouldnt bother about it being pci-e or agp let alone overclocking.
Heres what i would change to

1) AMD sempron 2500+ processor

2) Any cheap socket 754 mobo on newegg.com $46 like the one here
PCChips Mobo

3) NEC OEM dvd writer $40 (they are cheaper and bettr than the sony, where u pay for the brand rather than perf)

4) Hey try to get cheaper RAM on newegg. The kingston value ram is only as good as any other ram. Only a few bucks diff so its upto you.

The other components look cool!! Nice budget rig for gf :)

Raghu.

Socket A is dead ! I'd recommend the Socket 754 Sempron 64 2600+ & Biostar board as everyone else suggests. Though it will go significantly beyond your budget. For the rest i've listed cheap/same priced alternatives where possible.

Motherboard: Biostar ~ 60$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813138266

Processor: Sempron 2600+ ~ 64$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819104249

Memory : G.Skill DDR400 512MB ~ 35$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231026

(these were the cheapest and G.Skill is a pretty good brand !)

Drive: NEC ND-3550 ~ 40$

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152058

(The NEC is a much better drive and costs just 1$ more than the Sony)

Hard Disk: ~ 50$ (there are a lot of drives with rebates, you could look around for those)

ASYS cabinet ~ 29$ (sticking to your same cabby choice)

Total: 278$

I'm sure your gf is worth the extra dough :eek:hyeah:

Well, I already have a couple extra 80GB HDDs laying around, so I don't really need to throw money into one of those.. As for the rest, I got all those parts for about $10 more than my original idea. Thanks for the help! I might end up getting this little setup for myself as well. Only I might end up getting a GFX upgrade though. =P

Anyone have any GFX suggestions if I end up getting this setup for myself?

Anyone know of any 80mm quiet yet cheap and reliable case fans?

Well, the order has been processed and the items will be shipped in 1-2 days.. I couldn't get the RAM because it was out of stock, so I'm gonna see if I can get her parents to chip in and I'll run down to BestBuy to pick up 512MB of PC3200 for about $40..

heh that feeling of nostalgia.........built a sys for my GF a couple of years ago too...based on a 2.4HT proccy....

neeways go for a 400W PSU @ the most.....and even a 300W from antec would do....not sure about your micro ATX board but if it has AGP could go with an MX4000 card (64 meg), since presentations on office (.ppt etc) can take some time to load etc....

best of luck, and here's to the gain after the pain........;)
