I am looking to buy an Entry(ish) level DSLR with a maximum budget of 30K (including a 18-55 or so kit lens). My primary use of this will be to shoot video. Most of the reviews online are in favour of the 600D and most seem to say that the D3200 is better for stills.

Which would you guys recommend and also if there are any other options that one can think of.

Shooting 1080p at 24p and 720 at 50/60p is a must for me. (minimum requirement)

PS: was looking at an 1100D initially but the 600D seems better value along with better video modes.

TIA

If your main usage is video, then consider Sony NEX 3N or 5R. They are much smaller with Optically Stabilised kit lens and much better focusing ability in live view mode. If you really want the DSLR like ergonomics then try the Sony A58 DSLT. The only traditional DSLR with decent live view focussing is the recently announced Canon 70D which is way over your budget.

Thanks for your reply. The cheapest 5R is still around 8K more than the 600D. My budget was initially 20K stretching to 25K. Increased it to 30ish as I wasn't getting something which had all that I required. Another reason why the 600D is my primary choice is due to Magic Lantern as well as profiles available to give the "Cinematic" look.

The Sony A58 seems to have severely limited Video Capabilities. The A57 seems better, but again out of budget.

Most reviews seem to put the 600D above the competition as far as video is concerned.

The RX100 is within your budget and going by the reviews is as good as any mft/dlsr when it comes to video.

For movies stick with mirrorless cameras if you do want a DSLR check the Sony A58.The only difference in movie mode between the A57 and A58 is that the former has 1080p 50fps where as the later shoots at 1080p 25fps.

All those recommending the A58:

It has very limited formats (resolution, frame rate, etc..) as far as video is concerned. So I am not considering it.

D3200 is Entry level DSLR, where as 600D is Medium grade... I would prefer 600D over D3200
Please do not mislead the OP. 600D is a entry level camera as well.

RX100 is a fantastic still camera, however, the lack of OIS will be a factor. The NEX3N is cheaper and have a larger sensor with greater DR.

It has the same formats MP4 and AVHCD 2.0 which is available in A57,A99 and all NEX cameras.
It supports the same resolution as others, the only thing it lacks is the 50fps which none of the other cameras from canon and nikon support.

It doesn't shoot 24p. A must for me... Both codecs are more or less the same. Compressed like crazy. With the 600D (running Magic Lantern) I have the option to shoot in RAW. I apologise that my first post didn't mention my requirements a little clearer. Shooting 1080p at 24p and 720 at 50/60p is a must for me.

I have more or less made up my mind about the 600D. Yes it's an old camera, but at under 30K with a kit lens it seems to be the best option for me at the moment. I'd rather spend the extra 6-8K on a 50mm prime. Unless there is something on offer the beats the 600D at less than 30K (FOR VIDEO) I will probably order the 600D

You should try the camera before buying it. Like we said before, conventional DSLRs are pretty bad at focusing in live view/video modes compared to the SLT and mirrorless cameras.

Yeah. I just tried out the 600D in store (Croma) if it matters. Obviously there was no SD card inserted so no way to test video, however I didn't find it to hard manually focussing (by moving adjusting the lens :duh ) as far as moving subjects were concerned.

Also tried out the Sony A57 (under the same conditions) That Screen looks gorgeous. Made up my mind that I would never want to use Auto-focus in videos. With the sony slight movement in a busy frame would make it 'hunt' for it's subject. Again, can't say how it would react with video.

Any suggestions as to where I could spend a little more time with these cameras (in Mumbai) Dicking around at Croma doesn't really help.

May i ask what exactly are you going to shoot and what do you plan to do with the video footage.

Short films, lots of guerilla run and gun stuff. Most of the time with available (ambient) light.

Footage to be edited in Premiere.

Thank you all for your feedback. I have gone for the 600D. Will be investing in a 50mm and a 10-20/22mm zoom soon.
