Can I save Windows ?

I got an error saying a file isapnp.sys was corrupt or missing and I would have to repair windows. So I loaded windows bootable cd and selected setup and finally selected the repair option.

The setup detected my old installation and the s/w promptly repaired it. However on rebooting, it followed the same procedure, but now it cannot find my old windows setup and asks me directly to select the folder to install win xp completely new !.

I used Knoppix 4.0 to check and see if all the files on h:\ are there and they are intact. Can I repair windows without reinstalling it ?

For starters why dont you replace the Isapnp.sys, & see if computer boots normally, you could have posted before trying to repair xp

The file resides in C:\windows\system32\drivers folder, rename the old one as it is corrupt, copy the new file from your xp cd, CD drive:\i386\isapnp.sy_

you can replace the file either thru' your linux os or from your xp cd using recovery console. the dos command for replacing is -
expand CD drive:\i386\isapnp.sy_ C:\win dows\system32\drivers\isapnp.sys

if it's too late then at max you can backup your documents & settings foldder, most of profiles & settings are saved there.
2 things might happen when you install xp now,
1. either it will upgrade, in which case your progam files wont be tampered & all your registy entries would be safe, u just have to reapply the service packs & updates.(kind of repair)
2. it will delete your old windows folder, in this case all your registry entries would go for a toss, you have to re-install everything from scratch.

Thanks for the reply. I tried using the repair console to copy the file but it denies me access to any folder on my windows installation drive.

So Ill connected as a slave on my dads comp and do the backup and changes there.

Didnt get you exactly.

Are you booting from CD again ?

One thing you can try is , use knoppix and see if boot.ini file , on your Primary drive (Generally C:) has entry that corresponds to your installation drive only.

Yeah it booted again from the CD, I must have pressed some button perhaps.

Anyways I have installed the hdd on my dads comp and have backed up the data. I will try your suggestion with the boot.ini file.

But what is C:) !!!! Could you have meant C:\ ?
