raag

Beginner
ive gotta set up a lan between my desktop and laptop ...

all the hardware is working perfectly ...

but i just cant set it up ...

this is basically what i did :

in the MY Network connection , in the properties of the connection went to the TCP/IP settings .... i entered the IP , subnet mask etc.. from the info i got from running ipconfig ...

i did the same for both computers .... tried every possible combination but i havent been able to set it up successfully ...

could someone tell me how to set it up ?

What cable are you using?
You need to use a crossover cable.
i think it doesnt really matter if your using crossover or straight crimping
with the newer NICs

guys please correct me if im wrong

hmmmm..

firstly ...im still unsure abt this ...i dont really know what TYPE of LAN cable im using ..what exactly is the diff between crossover and straight crimping ? and do i need to use a specific type for setting up the network or it doesnt matter like suhayl said ??

I just gave my desktop 192.168.0.1
and my lappy 192.168.0.2

did u use 192.168.0 randomly or is it specific to ure network ?

Lets see,

U use 2 types of cables to connect diff networking elements.
1.straight cable
2.cross over cable

U use no.1 for connecting PC to HUB etc.
U use the no.2 cable for PC-PC connections and certain PC-router connections.
----------------------------------------------------------------
the ips u gave r valid.IP addresses are classified into 3 types

CLASS A,B,C [See This for more about IP classes]
u use CLASS C for LANs.

U need a cross over for direct nic to nic. Just follow these steps. 1. Put ur desktop ip as 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 (dosent matter). Default gateway as 192.168.0.1. Dns as 192.168.0.1. Now on ur laptop put ip as 192.168.0.2. and the rest exactly the same as the desktop. Gateways need to be same. C that ur mac addresses don't conflict. Now try pinging the lap from the desk and vice versa. Go to windows file sharing wizard and configure and enable filesharing.

youre done.

Why do the hell we need DNS here ???

Mac Address Conflict ???? Unheard....
You can change your MAC Id by using a flashing software but if you dont do anything of that sort then MAC are unique in the world

i think its a prob as the cable u r using is is a straight cable rather than a crossover. if the cable is wrong at least 1 comp ll say network cable unplugged, genrally both the comps ll say so! and yes u need cross over fr newer LANS TOO. i had similar probs while connecting my 2 comps 10 days back both with msi k8nneo4 plat gagabit lan.

Hmmm is it? Wow man since you know so much why the hell are you here. Do me a favour, click on device manager, then click on poperties in your lan card, go to something called network address. See a lil white box there? Guess what you can put in there... defintely not your sense of humour. Stupid A**.

i have 2 IBM systems in my college with same Mac Ids'....& it is NOT flashed.....:bleh: ...i know its' hard to believe....but it is the truth....some security flaw...
The nics are onboard.

ill need a crossover cable then right ???

confirming because i dont wanna go and buy the wrong cable again ...

Although the newer NIC's are said to be able to work with both normal and cross over cables, it wont do any harm buying a cross over cable. It will definitely work irrespective of your NIC.
