Cat 5 cable over 100 meters

I need 105 meters of CAT 5 cable to connect the hub on my bldg's terrace to my flat. But as luck would have it, I just didnt get any connectivity, connecting via a switch in between has solved the problem temporary. But evenually I will need to buy a switch.

Is there any other workaround. If not which is the cheapest switch, which would suit my purpose ?

The possible reason for this is that the signal strength is getting weakened with the absence of any repeater of the transmission. Hence, you will need a switch or something to get the signal in proper strength.
Though i dont think that for 105 mtrs you will need it.

Will find out from a friend who has done a similar thing.

*Moved to troubleshooting*

When I was using a hathway connection, they had run a ~ 125 mtr cable from their hub to my house....

The max theoretical length for CAT5 cable is 100 mtrs, however, a good quality cable can easily run upto 20-30% more than that without the need of a repeater/switch

POssibly your ISP is using low quality cable to run it from their hub to your house....

LOL possibly, I bought the wire myself, got the cheapest one available...

Ok here are other information :

Previously the comp was in a diff room. But now since I use it over 9 hrs a day, mom gave me an ultimatum to shift it to my room. In the previous room there was a wire coming from terrace to the room ( 70 meters ). I required additional 35 meters to get the connection in my room, so I got one of those converter boxes. After some 3-4 hrs of painstaking crimping, the network simply refused to connect. Fearing something was wrong with the wire or the convertor box, I took them upstairs to my friends place to check ( techmaster here ) all was working well. He had one of Isp's switch lying around so I decided to try it with switch at my place instead of the convertor box and all is working well.

1. I tried my onboard LAN ( marvel Gigabit Lan ) and it simply refused to be connected. I kept getting the network is unplugged sign.

2. I tried one of old lan cards, a dlink one. It was able to establish a connection but was unable to ping any other IP's apart from mine.

Back to the original question, how much is a new switch for ? and if any of you wanting to rid one of those extra switches lying around. Please contact me :P

i have a wire thats coming from the terrace that is 8th floor of the building... and net connection is absoloutley upto the mark...... there is a switch on my terrace.. now i am on ground floor... so i dont know how much meter wire has gone in that

@aces what floor are u living and what are the total floros in ur building

I am living on the 3rd floor, and its a 14 storey building with the terrace as the 15th storey. + the hub is at the diagonally opp direction to my room...

You need a Switch in the Middle, theres no other Alternative.

Most Cheap CAT5 Cables loose signal strength above 90 metres.

Really good ones do 110 - 115metres.

A) Buy better quality cable :P

OR

B) Instead of spending money on a a switch, get a wireless router (~2K) and a PCI wireless card (~1.2K) for your desktop, that ways, your connection stays futureproof

Hook the router to the original end of the cable (where it was working fine) and you are set...

or ditch the wireless card and run the cable from your router to the room

^^ Dont go wireless.

If you want your brother to even game a bit :P.

Plus, if the Signal is weak. Its even worse than cheap cable :P.

u can get a DLink switch for 1400 approx.

or since only u will be using this switch u can also do with a hub 700Rs approx

Hey Aces,
I hav 2 switches lying around as i had bought thm for my private Lan......(thnx to u guys...it bcame possible), nd bought a 16 port'r cuz few more friends joined in.

Nyways for u wire probs ....get DATAWAY cat5e, i can from experience say tht it works to bout 120mtrs(exact lenght for my friend :D) ...i too had probs with elcheapo wires...
Else if u want a switch (hav Netgear & Dlink) Pm me.

Signal attenuation within an apartment?

No gaming on wireless??

What are you talking about Adi....

Care to explain?

PS: Though Aces may not use this implementation, but would still love to hear the rationale behind the statement above

sorry for hijacking this thread but i dont wanna start a new thread.... do let me know guys if u know a bout a 1gb switch/router ....

Doesnt a wireless link add to more latencies ? I guess it should more time for the signal to travel in the air compared to a wire. Although i am not sure but i am guessing it should add at least 30-40 ms more latency to signal from the ISP ->wireless router to the Wireless card in the PC.

it's more in the range of 2-3 ms..

I get pings ranging between 1-4 ms between my machine (s) and my router depending on my location inside the house....

Also

I guess it should more time for the signal to travel in the air compared to a wire.

It's definitely not because of that..RF travels at ~ c

It's mostly due to the overheads involved in WEP encryption/decryption
