Why should you buy this little phone instead of putting 7-8K extra and buying something from the market.
Because of the software.

Phones have long ceased to be about hardware after the first gigahertz phones came out. It has been about the software ever since. It has also been about manufacturers locking down their phones and preventing consumers from getting the latest and greatest Android OS hate motorola.
The Mytouch 4G has one of the most brilliant communities in any phone - http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=796 . I was part of the group that funded the bounty to crack the 3.4 kernel which enabled ICS. That was an epic thread and you can read about it if you are interested here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728468 .
You could get an idea of the range of ROMs for this device, by looking at this page.

currently I'm running CM 10.1 (Android 4.2.2) - however there is Android 4.3 out for this device, which I have been too lazy to upgrade. (two different ROMs for the same are CarbonROM and CM 10.2)
The phone has an all-metal back and has a gadgetshieldz military grade screen protector applied. There is an additional one that I am throwing in with the phone. It also comes with a soft body case. I have put in a 16GB microsd card in the device as well as a HTC charger.
The only thing that I'm removing is the packaged earphones, which are... well, a bit unhygenic
The entire package is in a faux leather package that is one the better ones I have seen HTC make.
