One of my friends need a PC. The budget is 22-24K max without GFX card

Usage: Office, casual multimedia use, and very light gaming

Here is what I have in mind. The rig will be bought tomorrow from NP.

Intel E4500 @ 5100 :eek:hyeah:

Palit N73V @ 2,700 (if possible suggest an alternative)

monitor: Rs 8100 Max. I plan to get 17'' VA1703WB. Open to suggestions

RAM: 2GB Transcend or Kingston 667Mhz @ 1,700

Samsung 20X Sata DVD/RW @ 1,100

Keyboard+mouse Rs 500 (normal+optical)

Cabinet: Bijli 1,200

Hard Disk: Seagate 250 GB @ 2,500

SMPS: Powersafe Gold: 1,500 (he plans to buy a medium-end - 8600GT - GFX card later)

Total: Around 24K

Any suggestions?

why that smiley before the E4500? :p thats an atrocious price. look for around 4.85k.

n why an 4xxx series at all for light usage? :p

i use a 2140 for heavy usage ;)

nz, get a 2xxx series proccy n save another 2k min :)

put the saved cash into a good monitor. ur frnd ll appreciate that more ;) theres lots of choices for 19" in 9k. models from LG, Viewsonic etc.

That smiley is coz I bought E4400 around a year ago while building a rig for 30K. :ashamed:
Now in 22-24K you can get E4500

As for selecting E4XXX, series I always prefer to go for as powerful CPU as I can. Specially if the rig is for someone not that familiar with technology and will neither overclock and nor upgrade his computer for at least two years.

In fact this monitor+CPU is the question on which even I am pondering a lot... performance wise which combo is better: E2160+19" Monitor or E4500+17" monitor?

BTW techie thanx for CPU price tip

look, u might get him the E4500. but the fact is, FOR HIS LIGHT USAGE as mentioned, it doesnt make a difference to him whether its 4xxx or 2xxx.

the fact remains that he ll notice/use/appreciate the 19" more than the E4500 :p simple enuf.

+1 for the 2140/2160 with a 19".

You are probably right... but as his geeky friend I need to see that after a year, E4500 will still be serving him good while E2160 will tend to slow down a little bit. Of course, unless he overclocks it a bit. Right :p
Anyways will give him option to choose between 19" monitor and E4XXX series CPU :hap2:

for normal usage, 2140/2160 isnt gonna slow down anywhere :p it can handle vista n all normal use INCLUDING HD playback easy :eek:hyeah: so wat IS ur friend gonna be doing in 1-2 yrs? :p unless he suddenly goes into 3D modelling and starts cursing u over his 24k rig

You also have the amd x2 4000+ with a 780G motherboard combination. The 780G is best for casual gamers. This is just a suggestion. The rest of the configuration is perfect.

Ok... I will seriously consider buying him E2XXX CPU ^o

One question guys... does Palit N73V supports running RAM in dual channel? If now which is the cheapest C2D mobo with this support?

Here is one more config: AMD this time. Is it better than the Intel config that I listed above?

X2 4800 @ 3600

Jetway M2A692-GDG @ 2.5K

Seagate 250 GB @ 2.5K

RAM: 2X1GB Transcend @ 1.9K

Samsung 20X Sata DVD/RW @ 1,100

Keyboard+mouse Rs 500 (normal+optical)

Cabinet: Bijli 1,200

SMPS: Powersafe Gold: 1,500

Monitor: VA1912WB @ 9K

Total is again around 24K

No, Intel E4500 is better than X2 4800+ at stock. X2 4800+ is good enough for general use.

Yep E4500 is more powerful than X2 4800+

But as far as configs go (one with Intel+Palit and another AMD+Jetway), which one is better?

Intel one has advantage of a very good CPU but AMD one will give Dual Channel RAM support and better IGP as well as cost a few bucks less :S

performance wise, Intel is better.. that you know.. but you'll end up spending more for the rig as Intel's processor is costlier than X2 budget 4000 series :p . Few people have told me that AMD rigs in general feel snappier in windows than Intel's counterparts.. so the choice is upto you :D .

My rig is Intel based so now it's time to take plunge into AMD's waters... of course riding atop my friend's back ;)

If everything goes alright, will buy AMD-based rig tomorrow... granted I can get the components in NP at decent prices.

anymore more suggestions... well always welcome. The thread is open till today 10 am.

Thankx to all who wrote in this thread... special mentions: techie for forcing me to go for 19" monitor; Octave for pointing me towards AMD; AjayArun for clearing my Dual Channel doubt about Palit's mobo; and broar94 for keeping an eye on this thread even at 3 am :p

Bought the rig

Prices

X2 4800+ and M2A - VM @ Rs 6550

Seagate 250 GB Sata II (7200.10) @ Rs 2350

Transcend 2X1GB 800 Mhz @ Rs 1700

Cooler Master Elite 330 @ Rs 1700

Cooler Master 390W eXtremePower @ Rs 1700
(dual +12V rails with supposed combined output of 216W :S)

Samsung 20X DVD/RW @ Rs 1050

Viewsonic 19" (some model ending with WB and DVI support) @ Rs 8900

UPS: Microtek 600W @ Rs 1700

* With Elite going for around 1,700, I don't think that Zebbie's mainstream range (Peace, Lava, Bijli etc) has any place unless they improve quality. Same can be sade for products of iBall, VIP etc

* I initially wanted to buy Powersafe Gold 400W SMPS. But both Powersafe and CM 390 are priced very close to each other. Instinctively I bought CM one. But I am not too sure if this would be better than Powersafe SMPS.

I would say CM > VIP/Powersafe.

Also just noticed:

"Few people have told me that AMD rigs in general feel snappier in windows than Intel's counterparts"

FUD

ALso, had u waited i wud have told u to get E2xxx still :p u dont need a 4800+ or an E4500 as i said before ;) that was sufficient. could have saved 2k :p

Probably

But X2 4800+ with Asus M2A - VM @ 6.5K seemed like a quite nice VFM. The man who has bought this rig is not a gamer at all but harbours intentions to try hands at a few of FPS... 690G will serve him fine.
