"The hackers were able to listen to phone calls and read text messages, reportedly exploiting the system U.S. authorities use to wiretap Americans in criminal cases. The worst part? The networks are still compromised and it may take incredibly drastic measures to boot them from U.S. systems."
 
Privacy advocates and even companies(Like Whatsapp did when Indian government asked it to provide access to internal chat network for tracking) have been warning about this for quite some time. The US government has still not come out publicly with how bad it is currently (there were some reports that US Presidential nominees and their team members had been listened to, using this hack)
