Clarke's Rama: What does it look like?

Somebody please explain to me the inside shape and structure of the alien ship Rama from Arthur C. Clarke's Rama series, I just can't visualize it  .

From the outside it's a cylinder with two semi-circles at each end, right? And the cylinder is rotating along its axis. So when the exploratory tem enters Rama from one of the semi-circle, how are they oriented towards the cylinder? When they are throwing flares to look around where are they throwing them? And which way the stairs go? Where's the ocean?
Oh.. and I've just started Rendezvous, so no spoilers please ;) Thx.

well i think u almost got it right. in Rama the sky (up) is the central axis of the cylinder and the ground (down) is the inner wall of the cylinder.

now as the Rama spins a person gets pushed against the walls (centrifugal force), which acts as gravity and prevents a person to slide along the inner wall of the cylinder.
imagine it as the earth turned inside out.
