Storage Solutions Compatibility problem of western Digital MY Passport 1TB external HDD with Panasonic LED TV

I recently purchased Western Digital My Passport 1 TB External HDD but when connected to my Panasonic Viera TH-L50EM5 50" LED TV it says device not supported. When contacted with TV helpline they said max threshold is 500 GB. Any ideas about the same?
