Hi, a quaint query-

i have a small SoHo setup (Architects Office) here

-5 desktops (running winXp) are connected to a wired network via a switch.

-of these 4 are also connected to wireless network for internet using usb wifi dongles to a ADSL modem cum router Netgear DG834G v3 connected to BSNL Broad Band

-i have one laptop running Win 7 and one laptop running winXp connected to the wifi network for internet and for file sharing am using the wired LAN ports between the desktops.

My Problem-

-i want to share files on the desktops with the laptops wirelessly. how is this possible to do??googled a lot but have drawn a blank due to lack of clarity. i want to do this because it is pretty crumble sum to connect the lan cable every time to the laptops just to access data on the desktops and visa verse.

any pointers would be most welcome!!!

thanx in advance!!

file sharing over networks is pretty easy.. but first let me clarify properly.. you have 1 LAN switch, and 1 Netgear Wireless Router.

Now this switch, this is connected to a second incoming broadband connection???

it will be damn easy to share files on the 4 desktops that are connected via the USB dongles. about the 1 that isnt, plz clarify.

and second thing, sharing of files will be very easy when you want to access files on the desktop with windows xp, but if from windows xp or windows 7, you wanna access files on another windows 7 machine, it will be a bit of headache due to the crappy security features on windows 7.

lemme know..

If the switch is connected to the LAN/switch port of the ADSL modem then its pretty easy as all will be on the same subnet.

As for thinking that W7 has crappy security features, I guess that you are not aware of how good those features are.

thanx for the quick replies , the point for consideration-

-the wired switch network works independently of the wireless network. the switch is not connected to the wireless router/modem

-the wireless router is being used by the desktops/laptops/mobile phones to purely connect to the internet and nothing else.

-data sharing between the desktops and laptops is over the wired LAN switch which is cumbersome and inconvenient as the laptops loose all mobility!!!

-the wired network being used by the desktops/laptops is working perfectly fine no issues here.

-i have changed the TCP settings of the wired net work to 192.168.10.X, as the wireless router was using the 192.168.0.X settings(i hope that made some sense!!!;P)

looking forward to your inputs!!!

sir i am very aware of the features and their functionalities. what i dont like is that windows 7 doesnt offer a simple one click option to just turn off all that security for people who dont want it. you gotta do all that config. compulsorily before you can start sharing files in windows 7.

now see, right now, for the desktops and laptops using the wireless network, if your router is using the ip address 192.168.0.x, then set the ip addresses of your computers in the same series.. 192.168.0.2 and so on. and not 192.168.10.x.. the computers should be in the same series..

next, in your computers with win xp, go to my computer, tools>folder options>view tab and check the enable simple file and printer sharing option.

now, open the properties of the folder you wanna share, click on sharing tab, check the option to share the folder, and preferably give it a short network name.. like for C:/, just give C. prefer to have names without spaces although spaces wont create problems.

now from another computer, go to run> type > \\192.168.10.x whatever the ip address of the computer on which you have shared the folder. a window will open where you will be able see the shared folder..

but note this, that the speed of transfer of files over the wireless network will be very slow compared to Ethernet. you wont get more than 3 to 5 MBPS depending on your router and wireless band that you're using.. N, G..N is the fastest. whereas via ethernet, you can copy files at speeds of 100 MBPS, depending on the network card you have..

thats it. but this is for accessing a win xp computer from win 7 or from another win xp computer. to access win 7 computers from other win 7 or win xp computers, security and user access settings will have to be made which i will explain afterwards because i am feeling sleepy right now..

this process is simple, because the computers using the wireless network, are connected to the same network via a router which makes all this so easy.. for the computer not using wireless network, i will explain later because of the reason i gave earlier..

^^ that is 100 Mb/s and not 100 MB/s...

Then I guess you haven't heard about faster LAN cards. 1000mbps???

Or the very popular gigabit LAN which is not ridiculously expensive too!!!

I already said that with wired lan there's potential to get very fast speeds as mentioned. But with wireless LAN the speed is seerely limited even if the n band Is being used.

*severely

In that case you should have stated as 1Gb/s and not 100 MB/s. 1000 Mb/s = 125 MB/s. I have heard about Gigabit ethernet and N+ 600 Mb/s as well...

I admit your second point that a theoritically faster wifi is actually slower than a theoritically slower ethernet connection

Actually, it depends on the router/switch being used. Most of the cheap ones support switching of upto 100Mbps only. The more expensive ones have 1000Mbps support.

yeah.. but even the slightly expensive Ethernet cards will be close to the price of a wireless router.

#mho9ad5578 were you able to atleast share files on your 4 computers on the wireless network by the method i described????
