CPU/Mobo Cooler master hyper 101 or stock 955 BE cooler

Hi,

I have a cooler master 101 from my previous rig with me. My new rig has a 955BE and the stock cooler that came with it looks pretty impressive. It has two copper heat pipes similar to the cooler master one but has a full copper base. Hyper 101 on the other hand is taller and has more surface area on the fins.

Since I have both with me can you please suggest which one I should use. I might want to do some mild over clocking.

both the coolers u have mentioned are highly inadequate for the 955BE....u wud be better off wid a CM hyper 212+ at least....n it will give u much better temps at stock or allow u to oc a bit

I am using the 955BE for more than a year on the stock cooler. It is more than enough if you just want to try some mild OCing.
A drawback of the stock cooler is the noise at full speed operation. It is not audible while gaming/movies, but you will get to hear it while browsing.

Since the 101 has more surface area, it will be somewhat less noisy.

@OP,
If you are able to mount the 101 on the proccy, please do a comparison between that and the stock cooler. Run some CPU stress test for some specific time period and record the temps shown. That is the best way to know the difference for your specific casing/fans/ambient temps. It won't take more than a couple of hours to try it out.

-edit-
I have not OCed my proccy but the stock temps with the stock cooler indicate that I can try. In any case try to keep the load temps below 60. And if you are planning to keep the OC permanently, get something else.

I don't think you can push even a little because it heats up a lot, at 3.4Ghz full load my temps were 65c which is really not a good sign. But do you really think your CPU will be at full load when you are browsing. Lol:bleh:He... he....

I would recommend not to OC with the stock HSF, please get a CM TX3 or a CM Hyper 212+ for OC'ing. If you are not, run on CM Hyper 101.

Is the Cooler Master 101 compatible with the AM3 socket? Better is use the stock HSF or go for the Cooler Master TX3 (the 101 has an 80mm fan and yours is an older piece, so you might need new brackets for making it fit on the AM3 socket). Hyper 101 - Cooler Master - Leading Provider of Computer Case | Cooler | Power Supply -- check and get back. Hope this helps.
Whether its compatible or not wid AM3? CM site says it is... But i dont know that whether the mounting kit that he got is compatible or not... :(

what is the price of hyper 101 ?

if it is >1k better get 212+ @ 1850 /- total VFM !!

oops now saw your post !

you already have it !

hmm use it , itl'l give you ~10C advantage (use good paste like mx-2)!

yes the CPU will not be at full load while browsing, what I meant was if the speaker sound is switched off, you can hear the fans. Maybe I should have worded it properly :).

also added an edit to my earlier post.

The fact that his is an older piece mounted on a Core2 Duo plus the fact that the stock HSF of Phenom series performs pretty well on stock (albiet noisy). I don't think the smaller 80mm fan on the 101 will help, better deal is OP holds on to stock HSF and saves up later goes for a Cooler Master Hyper TX 3/ 212+ depending on his usage patters and expectations.

It is compatible with AM3. As per the specifications it is compatible with everything under the sun. I will have to check the mounting kit.

On a standalone basis which one would be better: stock or 101. I understand that both are insufficient for over clocking. I would run any one of these till I upgrade to hyper 212.

I couldn't find any CM 101 benckmarks except from xsreviews.co.uk. Even that does not have the actual numbers/temps as the image is missing. The best way for you to find out is to try it yourself. And use a good thermal paste. Since you will be upgrading the cooler later the thermal paste will be a nice investment now.

according to this shootout, it is not among the best.
80-way Thermal Interface Material Performance Test | Thermal Interface Material,Thermal Paste,Heatsink Compound,80-Way Thermal Interface Material Best Thermal Paste Heatsink Compound Cooling Performance Comparison Benchmark Tests

Product Name/Avg Temp Difference
Cooler Master HTK-002 Thermal Grease - 39.05°C

the best options
Arctic Silver 5 Polysynthetic Thermal Compound - 37.55°C
Shin-Etsu MicroSi G751 - 37.55°C

as you can see, the temp difference is just 1.5°C, which can be acceptable if you want to do some mild OCing.

You can find a few of those reccomended options here locally. I have the MX-2 which was around 375~, must be cheaper now.

I think the Hyper 101 wud b able to cool the CPU better than the stock cooler as it has two copper pipes and it is large so the heat wud dissipate properly... :)

^^

I've noted with sufficient air-flow a stock HSF can cool the Phenom IIx6 1090T to sub-40 degree temps (stock HSF + NZXT Tempest EVO) better than my Cooler Master Hyper 212+ on a Phenom IIx4 965 in a Cooler Master Storm Scout so OP can stick with stock HSF till he can get a Cooler Master Hyper 212+, in my views.

^^ i think OP doesn't have a cabby like Storm Scout or NZXT Tempest EVO... So first he shud try both the coolers whichever cools the CPU best then he shud use that cooler... We can't suggest him anything blindly... :)

I am currently using a umax cabinet. I have gone with the stock cooler. I played Crysis for half an hour and checked the temp it was 44 and hovers around 38 and 39 during idling(I closed the game and used ASUS probe 2).

Below are the pictures of the cabinet.
