Corsair Voyager GT 16GB USB 2.0 drive

Corsair has been a tried and tested brand for a very long time. Anything between memories to power supplies, they have been deemed as one of the most reliable brands for generic and power users. Flash drives enjoy the same reputation of being a default choice for many buyers- and earned it at the same time.

Corsair India sent me a Voyager GT 16gigs. This is in the market for some months now but the benchmarks are done via USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports (for those who are curious).

Currently they cost Rs. 1,600/- in India

Before I continue, someone asked why do I still review USB 2.0 products. Other than the fact that I would do so when I get it, but for now there are those who still buy USB 2.0 products and its still a significant number.

10 years warranty, probably people would have flash drives with bigger/better space and performance, but this pretty much shows the confidence they have on their voyager drives against the normal wear and tear.

Contents:

Comes with a lanyard and a USB extension cord. Nothing much to add about it here.

Test setup and Benchmarks:

Note: The drive is first formatted using Full Format option in SD formatter software. The usable space is 15.1GB. There was no proprietary software present in the drive.

There's no advantage of using in USB 3.0 but it shows that Corsair maxed out as much as they can from this drive for USB 2.0 ports.

Conclusions

For a USB 2.0 16gigs with 10 years of warranty+ extension cable and a lanyard and which is "shockproof" and durable, you got yourself one of those drives which will be with you for many years to come. Corsair also comes with a good replacement track record as well. Just keep in mind that due to the size of the drive, it would be a tight squeeze if you want to connect a USB device after connecting this, but that's more of a minor inconvinience rather than a con. After doing some searching, this drive seem to be bundled with a encryption software within the drive itself. But it will be nice to see Corsair having its own version of software like Ceedo in the flash drive itself.

If you're looking for a USB 3.0 device and don't mind the premium (depending on the local pricing), be on a lookout for reviews for USB 3.0 devices as notebooks, desktop systems and devices have started appearing in the market.

Thanks for this review, I was thinking of going in for the GTR version, and if this GT is as fast as you mentioned then I am sticking with this only :)

Cheers folks ;).

If anyone wants me to review something specific, go ahead and put it up- not just in this thread, but in any reviews I put up. I'll see if I can get the stuff to review ;). Yeah!! No lookin' back now I am on a review spree just like some folks here :D

I want a pic without the extension cord if possible. :)

Well it was shipped ASAP. Truth be told the media sample came in without the cap :P. Its just an ordinary looking USB connector.

gigabyte m/b gives extra performance on 2.0 with 3.0updated driver

Not sure about that. Unless its tested out its more of a speculation. Before you ask, no I haven't seen/read review which says it works.

A 1GB HD 6950 GPU and also if it can be BIOS hacked to a 6970 like is elder brother with 2GB memory.

Also, I'd like to know the price in India.

We also tested with a USB thumb drive and saw some performance improvements here as well, although not quite as high as with the external drive.

The screenshots that semi-accurate folks put up was from an external hard drive (on a GBT board with a Renesas USB 3.0 host controller port?). He didn't even mention which USB drive and there wasn't any screenshots.

Not that I am trying to deny it, but the test I did was with Corsair voyager GT USB 2.0 on a board with an NEC 3.0 chip which comes in most boards these days, even Gigabyte for a long time. There were "couple" of bumps but that's about it.

Hey Sorc - Nice reviews. Which 16GB Pendrive has good performance and price ratio currently available in India? I usually buy stuff from the US but right now I need this quick.

I have both Corsair 16GB Voyager and 16 GB GT. For sequential read/write both have exactly same transfer rates and GT is slightly faster for assorted files. Both gives about 14~16 MBps write speeds for sequential write. Really great for a Thumb drive. Get any of those.

I dont see Corsaid Pen drives everywhere.

1 - Where can I buy this one? How much for? Especially in Bombay?

2 - Any other varieties of Pen Drives that are good? Patriots etc.. that are available in India? I've mostly only seen SanDisk, Etc

Well there are more reviews to put up (4-5 I guess) but there's a lame rule that there's 30k character limit on the reviews section

Safin, atleast give some admin rights to saiyan so that he can do the needful. As it is this section shouldn't be named as "work in progress" section, let alone be dragged towards the bottom. Such inactions is simply discouraging people to put their thing here.

I thought Corsair used to provide Life-time warranty??

Not that its gonna make much of a difference :D

gonna get myself one of these ! have been using a voyager for 3 years now , and it taught me the meaning of "reliable " :)

Its much better if the warranty period is mentioned in years rather than calling it lifetime warranty. Despite that term being used by few companies, the Terms and conditions have certain differences. Its just too much hassle because companies at times declare a product as EOL before than they should. I always preferred a period of time being mentioned for warranty rather than the "lifetime" tag.
