Guys,

I need a help. I have windows xp home edition sp2 desktop computer. Have 256 RAM. Whenever I log on to any messenger like skype or msn or yahoo, my cpu usage peaks up and shows 100 %. My computer freezes and I cannot work on any other application when my messenger is running. It comes down to normal 2 or 3 % when I log off. Initially I thought to increase RAM. But I think its something with firewall problem or any trojan. I have nortan antivirus 2007 and also tried spybot search and destroy. No spyware found.

Anyone can give solution ? Thks in advance !

problem may be with nortons messenger scanning options or worm scanning functions. disable it and see if problem persists.

also norton 2007 sucks a lot out of the PC specially wid 256mb ram, better you use lighter and better antivirus like NOD32

I was thinking about this..really norton putting lot of loads on my computer I feel. But should I replace 512MB ram, so the cpu load will be reduced ? Or any other suggestions >?

Try other lightweight antivirus like avg. And make sure u dont have any spywares running when u start msn. For optimum usage 512 mb ram is required on win xp based comp. I recently upgraded my ram to 512 and can feel the performance difference.

Check which service is actually taking up all the cycles .. most cases it is svchost.exe (since u say it actually gets ok after logoff-logon) ... in this case , try turning off ur Firewall (just for checking) ...

Oh btw .. get rid of Norton .. it' makes good pc's go gaga ..
