CPU/Mobo Cpu limitation in Photoshop?

I have this strange issue. Everytime I am editing a camera RAW file in Photoshop, my CPU usage in both the cores remains spiked at 80-100% (X2 4000, 2 GB RAM) since I am always listening to music while editing in PS, the audio becomes choppy and starts lagging. Now am I getting CPU bound or RAM bound? Would getting a quad core AMD cpu help here? IE is photoshop a good multi threaded application?

Re: Cpu limitation?

Photoshop works without issues while editing JPEG's, only RAW files spike the CPU usage? Is your netbook able to handle editing RAW files without a slowdown?

Well only startup is slow.. after that RAW editing , applying filters etc is fine. I mean there are no hangups. It all goes at a steady pace. Ofc it takes a few more seconds than my desktop. Point being , that when i'm not multitasking , even a 1.6Ghz Atom can handle PS fairly well. Its gotta be the RAM.

Just trying to shortlist the possibilities :)

It would help if you would post what process is eating your CPU and are both cores at peak? Also, Post your ram utilization

Check the photoshop process in Task Manager. Set it to Normal Priority if it is anything higher ....
