Well I am planning to get a Broadband connection from BSNL, and want to know at what prices can i get the Modem that the BSNL guys are offering for 1200 bucks. It has just one RJ45 connector type port .
Well since BSNL is purchasing it in bulk and giving it to the users u cannot get these modems outside bsnl. D-Link modems are available but they cost about 2k. The quality of these modems is nothing exceptional and they are only average.
The modems/router provided by BSNL are the Huawei & UT Starcom models. MTNL gives the D-Link 502T model. Also the Wireless Router - D-Link DI-524 (Firmware Ver 1.11) (Hardware Ver. A1) is supposed to be pretty good.
I bought the D-Link 502T for about 2k. The difference is the warranty. Whereas in MTNL u get a yr. warranty here I got a 3 yr. warranty. The Linksys WRT54G / GX based routers are also good the only issue being that they don't support PPoA that well. I don't know the latest on these as in-between there were some firmware upgrades so after that if the situation has changed then I don't know.
Then there is the Netgear 834GT which is a modem+wireless router+ access point+ switch all rolled into one.
Some pointers if possible find out about the price-range as well as the firmware versions. For e.g. the D-Link 502-T which I first got was busted in a day, the issue the firmware was not updated which resulted it in being a brick. The D-Link people co-operated & I had the updated firmware one, this has been working for the last 9 months without an issue
