hey fellas
got my comp back !!!!
now got a prob .. sheesh
deejay had reinstalled windows XP on my c: drive...
now i have my music on the other hard disk.. which i had encrypted :)(cause i got fed up of people taking stuff from me without telling me)
anyways now i`m stuck. cause the music files wont play..!!!!
how the hell do i get em to play .. it around 50gb of stuff!!!!

pls pls pls pls pls help!!!!

Did Deejay knock off the older XP version, or did he install XP in a different parition? This is vital because, unless you can retrieve the key used for encrpyting those files, is located in the previous installation of windows (that now probably stands deleted), there's nothing you can do about it.

XT do post those links in this thread if there is a way!

Its pretty hopeless..
The partition was formatted and a fresh installation of XP was loaded.
I was there at the time this was done and the partition on which the OS files were supposed to be was corrupt as it was showing about 8 GB used and some 7 GB empty with no file visible in explorer.

The private key file used for encryption was not backed up and thus, the situation is pretty hopeless, i am sorry to say but i think its possible that he has lost his 50 Gb.

There is only one way remaining...consulting a private professional firm which can possibly recover the file containing the private key if that section has not been overwritten. Whatever happens, i am not sure that there is any such place in India which will do the job well.Even if there is one, the chances are minimal for his retrieval of data.

^^Yep that's exactly what I had in mind too. Unless he can recover the private key from the deleted version of Windows, the music will have to be kissed goodbye.

btw how did he encrypted the file.... i mean which inbuild stuff chic used............????

also does the drive shows the file or wht?????and u click on it and it doesnt play.....

Encrypted audio files should be seen and not heard :P Jokes aside, if the user account doesn't have the key, then the files can be seen but are inaccessible.

arra tracer boss i meant........within the folder was he able to c the icons of the songs..and when clicked it asked password.......nyways how did he encrypted ill try to do 1 myself..........arra kamsa kaam kuch toh shikh loon main....

@chic,
ur 150 gb hdd was divided into 5 partitions out of which about 14 gb was for the C partition (boot partition).

but it seems the FAT or the boot sector was totally corrupted since not a single file was visible in XP however it was showing about 8 gb full.....
as i had told you earlier i would be doing a repair install so i had backed up ur image files partition + downloads partition.
this 2 alone fully occupied my spare 80 gb hdd....
however during the setup of xp for repair install ur existing version was not detected at all. instead of giving the option of "Repair the existing partition" setup went straight into that formatting of partition menu .....clearly indicating that the existing partition was not detected at all by setup.
so we had no option but to do a fresh format and install on the C partition.

if you had even given us a hint about encryption stuff and the fact that you have not backed up ur security keys and certificates ...i would have tried to do a repair by "Recovery Console" procedure of the setup.

anyways lets hope some solution is found by the software guys here soon ...

btw: Question for software guys : what happens if you transfer these encrypted files to a dos based system like win9X or win NT ?? do they get de-crypted or do they get corroupt ??

Well, normally when you transfer to FAT etc, they get decrypted. But in this case, they will not. You see, to access the files on disk, the NTFS driver needs to be able to decrypt them, for which it needs the key, which it no longer has access to.

There is no way out - the encryption cannot be cracked, and the key seems to be unavailable. But try getting through to ferrar!, because once verrrry long ago, he spoke about some ways to try recovering the stuff.

ya its an mp3... and no its not marked as a system file... all my files are mp3.

will chk the encrypt links after exams get over, albeit with a heavy heart :(

but anyone knows anyway?
