CPU/Mobo Dead / dying CPU?

Forerunner
Hi all.
System in sig. Only new addition is a Radeon 5870, running on 10.10e drivers.
So I was running the system at 3.1GHz, stock vCore for the last 2 years now, absolutely no issues. BIOS for the P5Q-E is 2101, which is absolutely stable.

2 days ago, while encoding a couple of videos in Handbrake, the system went into standby mode, i.e. amber light on the monitor, all fans spinning. Had to hard-reset the machine.

Also, C1E and EIST were disabled in the BIOS.

So I set all speeds down to stock, and ran Prime95. Same issue - within 2-3 minutes, the system goes to sleep, and only a hard reset works.

Swapped RAM to a known good set of OCZ from my dad's machine, booted up with only the SSD installed. Same issue.

Even uninstalled the drivers for the video card, rebooted in safe mode and tried to run Prime. Same issue. Downclocked the CPU to 1.6GHz,and Prime and Handbrake run.

Does this mean a dead / dying CPU? If so, where can I RMA it in Bombay?

Many thanks for reading this far.

Before concluding on your proccy.....

have you tried resetting your cmos/bios by shorting the jumper and removing the battery?

then load all bios setup defaults.

Run your system with just basic things like single hdd, single ram stick, and preferably onboard vga.

In your OS check whether any system standby time is enable.

also run memtest for your rams (not dads).

if still the issue persists, its the psu then. Then check it on your friends machine.

you can RMA you proccy from Redington India pvt Ltd.
They have one office in Dadar but before going there call Intel suport in Bangalore & get yourself a RMA no. and then go to redington confirming that they have received your RMA request.

Yes, I have reset the CMOS via battery removal, and tried with one SSD, one RAM stick (tried 4 separately), and even swapped out the video card. No onboard VGA on my motherboard.

Memtest I ran overnight on my dad's PC, for all sticks of RAM. All seem to be fine.

PSU? All of a sudden? You think it's a possibility, even with the CPU running fine when downclocked?

Before you send the processor for RMA, have it checked on a different system to see if the issue persists. Processors rarely go kaput esp. when used on the stock clocks/volts. And do keep the OEM heatsink ready before you send it for RMA. Intel will not honor the warranty without the stock heatsink. :P

^Will do, thanks for the numbers. Will be running it on another G31 based board to check.

But I'm just amazed that it ran P95 for so long at 1.6GHz :P

Could be a failing Vrm or dying psu as well if afraid bro .. Check the board vrm heat sink and see if if its getting any hotter than normal ?

Have you tried a remount of the proccy bro ?

get it over and we can test :)

cheers bro !!

Tested and confirmed - Q6600 seems to be dead. Typing this from an E5200 powering my rig, running at 3GHz, priming for the last 3 hours, no issues at all.

Load temps are around 45-48C. Trying to get *!@#%ing Intel tech support to create an RMA.. bunch of buffoons.
