Decent low light lens for Canon camera?

I dunno why you are saying the 50mm f1.8 is useless in low light. A fast lens allows you to speed up the shutter so that you don't get blur.

I am not saying its useless...
I m just saying that its not a total solution to low light issue..

One cannot think that buying a 5K fast lens will make a victory over low light issue... (however you will win 60% of the game..:bleh:)

Also remember the funda, higher the focal length higher the shutter needed..

Hehe, those are some good discussions. BTW I have the IS kit lenses, and I might pick up the 50mm f/1.8.. if they are good VFM as you guys suggest. In the meantime will get a tripod too...

Go for it man, you won't regret it.!!:ohyeah: The focusing ring is little flimsy but 1000% perfectly usable.:D

From the day I have bought it, I still have not removed it once, of course you can't click photos sitting in your comfort zone but that's the beauty of it:P

For its wonderful DOF, i have attached a sample photo which i took sometime back.
Chk it out.:cool2:
[New here so don't know much about attaching photos]

It's not useless but since you need to keep the aperture wide open in low light, you will have a narrow DOF to work with, that's the only disadvantage i know of.
Other than that, perfectly fine.:hap2:

I have no such disadvantage. :D

With my Sony Alpha A700, I get IS + a fast f1.7 !!!! :ohyeah:
I was wondering when someone's gonna say that:D...in-body IS rocks!:hap2:
Btw, when did you upgrade from A200 to A700?

Also, why don't Canikon make IS/VR primes?

Himmat bandhe rakho... jald hi hoga..
BTW, there are many telephoto primes with IS/VR

Canikon are more busy making patents...
I guess in 2009 Canon made more that 2000 patents...

They are comming. Canon came out with their 100mm IS lens and Nikon have now come with their 85mm f3.5 VR lens.

However VR lenses add a lot to the cost. Thats why i went the Sony way. I can use cheaper off brand lenses like Tamron and Sigma and ill still have IS.

BTW, aces - are your pics noisy or blurry? Noise issues due to high ISO could be solved somewhat in s/w like noise ninja, I think. Blurry pics might be due to improper focussing. (just thinking off the top of my head. Still trying to digest all that I've been reading over the last few days)

Ok, this is an interesting thread.

1. I'd still rate the 50mm f1.8 as the very best lowlight lens. Don't confuse yourself too much, it's a simple equation:
- At 50mm, your kitlens is at f5.6, while the 50mm prime can be at f2-f2.8. At f2, you have 8 times more light hitting your sensor, and at f2.8, you have 4x the light!
- So a 1/10s shutterspeed at 50mm on your kitlens, can now be used at 1/40s at f2.8 or 1/80s at f2!
- Anything above 1/30s should be easily hand-holdable with some practice. (I do hand-held at 200mm, 1/25 or 1/10s...so am not the best example here. :P)

@Sunny: VC/IS/VR/OS/SSS do not freeze subject motion. Simple.
80% of the shots that any average photog takes are people, who are always twitchy!
The other 20% are still life, for which I'd love to use a tripod and lower ISO always. :) Of course, again...I am a guy who likes to carry equipment everywhere, so plz to excuse. :P

Cheers!

Ohhh! Didn't think of that! :ashamed: That makes the 50mm prime all the more attractive :)

So how do I get a discount coupon for smartshoppers.in? :ohyeah:

Correct! Thats why I asked before if the OP is taking still photos or someone in motion. If the person/thing is moving then i dboubt IS will help, fast lens is the way to go.

nice discussion ladies :)

if i may chip in with a question though,

why do you say, the 50mm f1.8 is useful at f2-f2.8, and not at f1.8 itself?

and would the same happen as well on the nikon 35mm prime?

Its not true that 50mm it not usable at f/1.8.. the thing is that it is not the way sharp at f/1.8.. but do get sharp when stopped down by 1...

yes same thing is with 35mm prime..

thanks for the info guys, read up more on dpreview :)

btw, the canon one wont auto-focus right? coz i'm really jealous bout the price.

i already want to buy the 35mm prime for my nikon, but i'm trying to hold myself back , atleast for 6months or so.

^^ Canon cameras have the AF motor in body, and not the lenses. The only reason I bought a Canon in favour of Nikon. So the lens should auto focus...

The Canon 50mm f/1.8 completely auto focus...
No issue like Nikon ones of having autofocus motor in body or lens...:bleh:

AFAIK Canon cameras dont have AF motor in bodies..
Rather all Canon lenses have AF motor in them by default.. not like Nikon in which some lenses have AF motor some dont...
However it depends which type of motor is there.. it can be AFD (arc-form drive) or micromotor drive or Ultrasonic motor [USM]
[correct me if I m wrong]
