As always, Dell is working all the angles, its latest move being, apparently, the addition of a few new models to the UltraSharp series of widescreen monitors with 21.5 to 24 inches in diagonal.

The market for displays, like all other segments of the IT industry, always could do with some new announcements, since the freshness factor needs to be preserved.

This is because technologies are launched or improved fairly often, not to mention that prices drop for backlighting and the like.

As such, the fact that Dell has three new UltraSharp displays out and about, or soon will, although when, exactly, is still a mystery.

They go by the names of U2212HM, U2312HM and U2412HM and, as their names imply, have screen sizes of 21.5 inches, 23 inches and 24 inches, respectively.

The HD in the name stands for the 16:9 aspect ratio, while the M signifies the e-IPS panel classification, as a certain report explains.

Indeed, all three newcomers have IPS display panels, while their W-LIED (White-LED) technology provides power-efficient and, thus, cost effective backlighting.

The W-LED also determines the color gamut, in this case an 80% coverage of the NTSC color space (it is a standard one).

What's more, Full HD video quality should be supported, meaning that the monitors all have a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels.

The exact brightness level is something that has yet to be revealed, as is the response time, and there is no telling when this information will be discovered.

The final detail known, for now, is in regards to connectivity: DVI and DisplayPort connectors are present.

Availability should ramp up by the end of the year (2011), maybe as early as the third quarter. It remains to be seen if any reports with the rest of the feature set emerge by then.

And those would be?

The blacks could be a bit better.

The uniformity of color over larger panels could be improved.

Input lag could be decreased.

Anti-glare coating could be a little bit less aggressive.

(Though the last two points are complete non-issues for me.)

Overall, there could definitely be improvements.

@stalker - All three LCD panels I have owned were 16:10. I'll keep buying 16:10 till I can afford them, but at some point, they'll die out. :( There is also the fact that most games now support 16:9 resolutions better. There are black bars in cutscenes and the game resolutions are hor+ scaling instead of ver+.

My current monitor is my first LCD. All monitors at work till date have been 16:10, which was why I just HAD to get a 16:10 for myself.. Hopefully, there'll still be a few affordable 16:10s around when I shift up to 1200p :p

I've been using displays with 16:10 aspect ratio over the past 4 years or so. The first was the Dell SE198WFP during July 2007, switched to a U2208WFP sometime in 2008 and then the U2407WFP which I've been using for the past 2 years. Been in love with the present panel which is an SPVA and never thought of an upgrade ever since then.

One of the better investments I had made back then. :p

^For which they will need a 27" eIPS panel from LG. No such panel out now.

Also, for those complaining about black levels - get a cPVA/MVA monitor, IPS will not give you the best blacks around.
