Hi guys. Looking to buy a new phone. Budget is 20k. The 2 phones i have shortlisted are the desire s and the nexus s. i was also looking the upcoming nokia mango phones. however, i dont like the fact that they will make using the zune compulsory. i prefer plug n play. if anyone has a different point of view on mango, please do share. hows the app market for WiMo yet?
Pros for the nexus s
Quicker updates?
Good looking phone
Slightly cheaper than desire S
Cons for nexus s
Discontinued in India. is tht a big factor?
Pros for desire s
I believe HTC sense is really good compared to vanilla android and touchwiz (thats why i have not shortlisted the galaxy s)
Cons for desire s
will have to spend an additional 1-2k. is it worth it?
My requirements are: Should be sufficiently futureproof, Battery life should be good, Usage - browsing, apps, maps
music/videos will be minimal
Looking forward to your help guys!
Nexus S will be getting ICS first than any other phones in the market. Nexus Prime will be the first phone to get ICS out of box, while Nexus S will get it first OTA. So you are certain to get updates first. Even after release of ICS, the further updates within ICS will reach you first. It is not discontinued. It seems like in India due to people not buying it and instead getting Galaxy S
Pros of Nexus S
1) It is indeed future proof phone. You will get updates first directly from Google along with Nexus Prime.
2) NFC Chip
3) Gyroscope/Gyrosensor
4) Hummingbird Cortex A8 processor for excellent performance and also Powervr 540 GPU for excellent gaming and HD movie playback
5) 5 MP Camera with LED Flash (No 720p video though)
6) Vanilla Android
Cons
1) No 720p video recording
2) No external memory slot
3) Vanilla Android has been a negative for some who expects phone with widgets and custom overlay.
I am not going to mention Desire S at all because it is expensive and not worth getting it when comparing it to Nexus S. Why?
1) Not sure if HTC will give you update of ICS. Even if it did, do not know how long it takes to reach your phone
2) HTC Sense seems to hog down the memory and makes the phone slower. This has been traditionally the problem for any HTC phones.
3) The processor is slower compared to Nexus S/Galaxy S. Also the GPU is slower compared to Nexus S/Galaxy S.
Now, given your requirements I do not think you care if it is Single core of dual core phone. So I would recommend Nexus S hands down since it will be supported by Samsung service centers.
Galaxy S will be a step further if you consider what you will get on top of already same hardware as Nexus S:
1) Super Amoled Screen is absolutely stunning with unlimited contrast and vibrant colors. They provide unlimited viewing angles plus HD movies just look stunning. Browsing is also comfortable.
2) FM Radio
3) It has 16gb internal plus option to add 32gb external for the total of 48gb memory.
4) With the best community mod support, Galaxy S will definitely get the ICS. It goes by this logic, since Nexus S has same hardware as Galaxy S. What is possible in Nexus S should be possible in Galaxy S too.
If you are into futureproofing from hardware standpoint, then by all means get Optimus 2X since it is dual core. But keep in mind that in a few months, there are phones to be released with HD screen resolution and higher MP cameras plus even quad core possibility.
So you can choose between Nexus S/Galaxy S/Optimus 2X which should cost anywhere between 18k-23k. I say Nexus S because of Software future proofing and updates you get from Google considering LG's reputation.
