Desktop 'dreaded' blue screen shows - UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

I was scanning with quick heal when during scan the PC shutdown & then when i restarted i got this blue screen which had all the usual stuff written + this 1 > UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
The same prob is faced if i try to boot in safemode.

Please help me as i dont want to format it as i cannot transfer my stuff from H: (this is where i installed my OS & not C: ) as i cannot login through safemode.

If at all i've to format it then pls guide as to how i should install WinXP through pendrive n not cd as my CDROM is not working.

Just need to repair the bootsector using a bootable cd. I dont know abt doing it from a pen drive though.

I know the method to do it through pendrive but i just want to know onw thing now - how to make pc bootable through pendrive.

i went to bios but i could not c the option of usb for first boot device & wat is LS120 & SCSI options in the 'first boot device list?
 
You can set a usb device as the 1st boot device. A friend made a bootable pendrive in Ubuntu and used to boot with it at times (It is pretty slow though).

If your MB doesn't have an option you can try upgrading your Bios.
 
If your motherboard is new you will be able to boot through USB, If your motherboard is older than 2 yrs you can try flashing the bios. Steps on flashing are given at your M/B manufactures website

i've downloaded updates for my BIOS version from GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - BIOS - 8I845GVM-RZ

can i install these through dos prompt n will it give me the option of USB booting as first boot device?

the latest update for my bios n mb version r from 2005.will it still give me usb option if i update it?
 
Wait don't. I don't think 845 motherboards had that feature or upgrading them will add that feature.

I am just checking to make sure.

Check page no.25. You have got an option as USB-HDD, USB-FDD and USB-ZIP as options for booting devices. You can use one of those.

I guess I was wrong about 845 not supporting usb booting.

No need to upgrade the bios (Anyways it is too risky).

1. I've to execute the cmd usb_prep8 & then i'v to press enter.Currently my screen is displaying - what command should i give inoreder to execute cmd usb_prep8.

The bootable pendrive is working but still facing probs such as >

1. When i boot with pendrive i get 2 options

a. GUI mode - start XP setup continue.......
b. TXT mode - xp setup.......

When i select 'a' i get message that 'hal.dll'' file missing.Then i select 'b' & it runs fine, then i run RECOVERY CONSOLE;it shows C:>, but i had my OS on H:, so i type h:, but it doesnt accept any command on h: & insists on creating BOOTSECTOR in c: only.It doesnt show 'c:> windows' in first place cos there is no WINDOWS folder in C:.

3. I remember that there was an option of 'normal repair' in the XP SETUP whereby it used to remove the files like dll,boot.in & replace all those again with the missing ones only without touching any other files on the drive.
Wheres the option here?...Is recovery console only option to repair?

4. I may have lost all my data on H: cos, when the BLUE XP set up screen shows my 6 partitions for H:, it doesnt show NTFS/FAT & the total space = 11000mbl tota & free 11000mb!!

I'm losing patience already, what the F should i do now? :banghead:

Is formatting H: blindly is the only option left?
 
This is getting a bit too complicated so lets see if we can use a simpler solution.

1. If you are using a second pc or a friend's pc you can back up the contents of H: drive on to your second pc and then disconnect the original hardisk of second pc. Use the second pc's cd rom to install XP on H: drive of the 1st PC and reconnect that to ur 1st pc. Copy the drivers onto a pen drive and install them on the PC. Reconnect genuine HDD of second PC and both PCs are working again.

2. You have a Laptop with a DVD-RW that supports 'boot from cd'. Download and burn Ubuntu Live Cd. Boot from DVD-ROM. After you have started ubuntu use it to create a bootable usb-drive. Follow steps given here:

Use this pen drive to boot the pc in question. Take a back up of your H: drive and then format H: drive and reinstall XP.

I would prefer that you use step 1.
 
ya ,i may try the 1st step but i'm not sure if i may get a 2nd pc.If i had that option, no queries would have arised as i would have just backed-up my h: contents n formatted the drive.

i want to ask that as of now r there any chances that i may have lost my data on h: as

Secondly i'm sure that earlier when i used to format my drive there was another repair option other than recovery cosnole which used to replace files which were corrupted or missing like dll,boot.ini etc n didnt have to format the drive.

I hate to say this but I think you have lost the data on H: drive. The partition might have got corrupt. Even if you connect it to your friends machine you will get a message saying, "The disk in drive H is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" You cannot use that partition unless you format it.

If you want to recover data you will have to run a partition recovery software on your friends machine to get the data back. Some of the recovered data might be corrupt.

I think a fresh installation should fix the problems. As for the data it will be gone. I hope you didn't have important data on that drive.

If the data is very important there are some computer repair shops who recover data. Since you are from Mumbai here is what you can do. Go to Anupam stationery at Andheri (W), ask the guy (dark-thin) who sells only computer peripherals for data recovery engineer and he will give you the telephone number and the address of the person who does (I think it was the Shop to the right of A&A computers at Sunil Shopping Centre opp. Navrang). He had given me the details but I lost it (Sorry about that). The charges are crazy though ranging from 1500 to 5000 Rs. Since I had movies and games which was given by a friend so I didn't go for it.
 
No your data is not lost, go to the XP recovery console and type in the following
command
chkdsk h: /r /i

Your hdd partition is locked due to some corrupt files. After running CHKDSK it should fix your HDD partition [It fixes 80% of time, 10% it will run for 1-2 mins and quit, 10% it will not run]. If not get a Linux Live distro the one i like is Knoppix V5.1 for such scenarios. Let me know how it goes will give you other methods for the same....

And yeah your boot sectors or master table is not corrupt, run the above command you can eliminate the /i option if it does not run, or if your want quicker.
And if you have any other windows installed on the same machine, boot in and use the following command.
chkdsk x: /f /i X: being the drive letter assigned by windows for the problematic partition.

And the guy next to A&A is a$$hole stay away from him....
 
If data is really imp, take it to any of your friends place and install it there. Then try some recovery software like GetDataBack For NTFS

That's the only option i can think of.
