desktop icon gone

hi pals.
i installed winxp but after some time..its not displaying the mycomputers icon on desktop and ..not showing the standbby option when i shut down..i dunoo wht had happened...
i have tried all the tricks and tools...but not working ..i have sacnned my pc too...
tell me wht really happend..

If all the icons are gone right click on the desktop and see if show desktop icons is checked. If not check it.

Other than that right click > click on properties > goto desktop tab > click on customize desktop and check the icons you want on your desktop.
