Graphic Cards Did my graphics card just die?

Man this is so depressing so here it goes, just when i bought some awesome games from the sales :(

Yesterday after playing L.A Noire, I booted up Mark of the ninja when doing so my Computer Hung and i had to hard reset it, again after reset i try running the game windows 8 froze, so after the next reset i didn't start any games but again my windows 8 froze.

I thought something was wrong with the hard drive and used my other HD to install the OS after installation when computer booted for the first time, after a couple of minutes, again the whole computer froze, clearly my old hard drive or the new one wasn't the problem, so i removed my graphics card (8800gt) and i shoved in my back up entry level gcard and booted my system and guess what ? it booted just fine without any issues, so just to be sure i once again booted up windows 8 with 8800gt again windows 8 wouldn't boot past the loading screen, but after swtiching back to my back up card everything became fine.

Prior to this incident there were few issues with my card like drivers crashing and , whenever i played games on my 8800gt i never have witnessed artifacts. once in a while the game froze and that's it but nothing like this so is my card dead?

seems like the card is dying if not dead. i would suggest cleaning it up and replacing the thermal paste on the chip. maybe its heating up too much.

My card was idling at 50C at 100% fan speed no way it was getting hot

Also one more thing , my card is an alpha dog edition , so it was factory overclocked, and i was unable to play games with the overclocked frequency's, only after under clocking the memory and core clocks i was able to play games

That's a sign of chip degrading. It will only increase over time / usage.

in that case, i do feel the card is dying. but i would stil suggest cleaning the card and trying. just incase the vrms are heating and causing instability.

Could you describe the nature of freeze.....I mean did you see checkered distortion of graphics? or something like it. If yes... your card is asking you to replace it. It happened with me with my new 550ti. My screen froze completely. But yes if you plug the same card after 2-3 days it works fine again for a few more hours and dies. Actually I played too much with overclocking which killed it. Some say the the video memory of the card gets corrupted.

^^ actually he is right oc vram could be an issue underclocking them might help use nv inspector or afterburner , did u get bsod? while playing games? while playing full hd movies? then the card must be dying, what psu you got? try it with other systems and check, also try reinstalling the drivers skip 300 series use 275.33 whql driver

Its time has come. I and a couple of friends all bought the 8800GT in its prime years back and almost all of our cards have died out. Out of 6 people I know, only 1 person still has a working 8800GT. I suggest you start saving up for an upgrade, ovening it could extend its life a bit though.
