Why is it one can get a mobile device at 12k and a HDMI display costs just as much???

Mostly economies of scale.
Phones are manufactured in high volumes, so average production costs are lower.
You can transport goods in high volumes, which is cheaper.
If your goods are fast moving and you can predict the demand, then you can reduce inventory maintenance costs per unit.
Lastly phone manufacturers recoupe some cost by selling ads or installing default apps. So they can lower the cost for consumers.

The 5.5 inch HDMI AMOLED supports various hardware without software drivers, so it has more work done on the board than the displays you find in Android phones. Also it has HDMI out.

If it wasn't for the GPL licensed GNU Linux kernel, we won't be able to use the display in Android devices unless we write drivers from scratch. If you remove the display from an Android device, its lots of work to make it work with another hardware.
