DIY Shutter release button

Hi.

I've been upto some moneky business. I came across this really simple diy camera shutter release thingy and thoght i'd try it out.

Link 1

Link 2

Link 3

I tried out as according to link 1 but to no success.

So I fished out an old 2.5mm mobile earphone ( single earphone of nokia) I just cut off the earphone + mic and retained the wire alone

There are 2 wires coming out of the pin.

Wire 1 = Red sheathed copper wire + unsheathed gold copper wire

Wire 2 = Green sheathed copper wire + unsheathed gold copper wire.

I just tried my luck and shorted all the wires. To my surprise, the camera (canon 550d) auto-focussed and started recording (bulb mode) and when i took them apart, it stopped. Unfortunately, i'm not able to figure out the combo. I thought i'd connect them to three switches ( 2 pushdown and 1 toggle). Since there are 4 wires all together, I'm totally confused as to what goes where. I know it works, I just need to get the combo right. Electronic Geeks please help!!

If this works, its gonna save me roughly 500 to 1k in buying a readily available one in the market.

(Please move this thread to the respective section if its in the wrong section. Don't know where to submit it)

Edit: Nevermind. I figured it out and got it right.

Heres my crude device: Saved me roughly 550 Bucks. Works like a charm! :)

Black button = autofocus + shutter release

Red toggle switch = AF/AE lock

Black Switch = Bulb mode

Re: DIY Shutter release button help

Thats a really good deal done by U...

I am following this DIY from more that 6 moths but never dared to make it by own... so kind of electrophobia....

Re: DIY Shutter release button help

Its actually very simple. I just got my ticket for astro photography :P Now waiting for clear nights

Re: DIY Shutter release button help

That's nice work blueren.

I have bought chinese shutter-release switch from dealextreme for some 4.5$. It works without any problem.

This thread should be moved from 'general Talk' to maybe 'General Portables'.

Sorry for digging out old thread, but this will be helpful to many. :)

Re: DIY Shutter release button help

:P yeah.. could be helpful.. I'd totally forgotten about this thread here.. And I still love the bomb trigger.. Still works without any hiccups! :ohyeah:

lol man! How did you even find this thread? I posted it almost a year ago

Hi Blue.

Wasn't hard. The photo section here is much smaller than on a photo-centric forum. How's your switch working a year on? Perfectly, I expect. Have you done any other camera hacks or DIY projects since? I thought of this when I saw your thread:

Happy day.

This is a n00b question, but where does this Shutter Release module's 3/32" jack goes into? My 1000D does not have any port that says Shutter Release. Does it go into the same port where the USB connection wire goes?

Looks like there are three connections underneath that rubber flap. The top one is for video. The bottom one is for USB data transfer. I think the center one is for the remote control. Here's a link to dpreview's illustration of the same;

Here is the review from which it came:

Maybe a fellow Canon fan can verify that the above is correct. My Nikon uses a different connector altogether.

Good luck with it.

Happy day.

I had bought remote-shutter release switch and read about DIY stuff on DIYPhotography.net | Photography and Studio Lighting. That made me try and search for similar things on TE, n there popped your post.

Yeah, the port in middle under the rubber flap is used for remote shutter release.( Me too owns 1000D and have a chinese shutter release switch bought from dealextreme)

I just made for myself (following some tutorial from internet) this little baby. It's just a single action shutter button. If I press the button once, it just Auto-Focus (if lens is in Auto-Focus mode) and click the picture when the subject is locked. In Manual-Focus, it just shoots the image with the focus setting of the lens at that time.

In BULB mode however, it keeps capturing the the image till the time I keep hold of the button.

And now for the picture:

Neat eh? ;)

Thanks for the inspiration, Blueren.

^ Naaiice! :) if you can open up that button enclosure, you can add another switch that'll help you with the bulb mode :) OT - love what your siggy says :P

^ I had to open the enclosure anyway, to remove the mic or it wouldn't work. Yes, I can attach a perma-on button but that wouldn't look neat or would it? :P

About the signature, it's old and ubiquitous but I like how it's framed. :P
