downloading from public tracker with dht & peer exchange off

i have a torrent client which i use primarily for downloading from private trackers for which you are required to turn dht & peer exchange off & forward a port so that you are connectable.

if i wanted to download from public trackers can i do so using the same client with same settings? is there any risk to having a open port when doing so?

i cannot install another client to use solely for downloading from public trackers so that option is not available to me
