Hey guys,

Can anyone suggest me which Dual layer DVDs to prefer and whats the capacity of a Dual Layer DVD ?

Also which one is better in Double sided single layer and single sided double layer DVD ?

The reason is i have one 8GB movie i guess its 720p Bluray. So i wanted to burn it on a DVD.

Any other suggestions are welcomed :)

Should be ~ 4.7X2 GB. DSSL is hard to get but SSDL is available in most of the stores here. Though price is a bit high.
And one thing are you sure that a blu-ray content can be written on a Dvd? I have little/no experience till now in the matter, but the blue ray (streaming/read) bandwidth is higher than Dvd, AFAIK. Won't the pictures be choppy on the dvd when played if it is in blue ray format?
A higher resolution .avi can however be played and thats not a problem.

The capacity of a dual layer dvd is 8.55 GB.

By 720p Bluray, it means that the movie has been ripped from a bluray disc to a x264 720p movie which can be burned to a normal dvd and played on the computer using codecs like CCCP and coreavc.

We did write dvd's in CD's ....right... It was divx but initially they called it dvd itself...

Same ways...Ppl rip 44 Blu ray dvd's to 4 & 8 Gb's (compressed). There is absolutely no problems in playing these off the dvd.
Also if u write the entire 44 gb in say 6 Dvds the picture will not be choppy if u have a high config PC. Mediaplayer classic, VlC player, etc all support HD format.

dipen01, I would suggest u to break the 8 gb file to 2 parts 4 gb each and burn to 2 discs which would work out to be cheaper and effective (That's what I do).
Double sided single layer is like 2 single layer dvds but more fragile ....

Also, dual layer cd burning technology is not matured till now (All companies make dual layer dvd's using the DVD pressing machines and not by burning)

So I suggest break the file into 2 and then write into 2 dvds.....

Or better...Buy a Blu Ray dvd writer:ohyeah:

i want to sell of a couple of new vertabim +r dldvds since i dont need so many...lemme know if ur interested

And how should that be done ? With HJ Split or something like that..or there are other good progs for it ?

@nuke :- what are the prices...

OT - Just out of the blue, how can be compare the video quality amongst.

1) 2 CD Rips (The usual 1.4GB ones)
2) 4.7 GB Original DVD
3) ~4.7 GB 720p Bluray Rip

In short is there any comparison between all the formats i.e w.r.t quality and its size..

If theres has been a good discussion over this link from TE would also be fine as i searched but couldnt find any proper link. I must hv used diff parameters..

^^ well size u already mentioned....quality wise 3 >> 2 > 1 ...not much diff between 2cd rips and dvd i guess coz 2cd rips r made from the dvds only..between 2 and 3 u wud normally not notice much diff while using low res( 17/19 inch monitors) but if u watch them on higher res monitors...u wud know wht its like to have a BD rip ... i have watched a 2cd dvdrip and bdrip of 300 on my 22inch...the dvdrip pales out in comparison...

Whats the file type, .mkv or .ts ?

As jediknight said

DVDRip < DVD < BlurayRip.

In a nutshell, this is the usual resolution of the files.

DVDRip Resolution 512 X 384

Video 23fps
Data rate 156kbps

DVD Resolution 720 x 480

HDRip Resolution 1280*544

Video 23.976 fps Data rate 5397 kbps

Its .mkv so played by VLC but not Mplayer Classic... But one thing i didnt understood was there was one BD rip of 2.8 GB another of same movie of 4.7GB and also of 9 GB...well i know resolution difference... 720p 1080p.. but still is such a huge difference recognizable ?

Ok one last question where does 2.8 GB BDRip stand between 4.7GB DVD Rip.. Actually there are few of my fav movies which i want in best of resolution so i am deciding on which ones to prefer ;)

btw download a 1min clip of Saving Private Ryan. The size is 56 MB :bleh: but quality is awesome.

To split a .mkv file , you can use mkvtoolnix, however I have not done it so I will not be able to comment how successful it will be. There is a guide at hdbits about splitting mkv files.

There are different sizes depending on how a movie is encoded and compressed, same as you find 700MB and 1.3GB DVD rips. Most of the movies I download are 4.3 GB and quality is very good. You'll not be able to notice any difference between a 4.3GB and 8GB rip unless you watch it on a large screen, or you zoom and magnify the screen.

Last time i went to Ritchie Street the Dual Layer DVDs were selling for about 90-100 bucks....not very sure but this should give u an idea of the cost..:)

I Dunno that..!! I guess u can pm him if ur interested..he has some spare ones

and Verbatim is nice brand

i got the vertabim pack from katman's GO

got 10 discs for 1k(out of a 20 pack), will use 3-4, dun need the rest anytime soon

Coming to the quality of DVDrips, the standard reso is 512 X 384 in divx/xvid, but I've seen some rips now come in x264 codec (packed in .mkv), generally 2x700mb files - and these are much higher reso, convert these to dvd vbo format and you'll get an identical quality to a real DVD.
