I have two 3 yrs old HP CD-RWs. One of them is not readable for a few months. The other one has been great. But today, while the CD-RW was erased by NERO, I accidentally pressed the eject button. :( Now the CD-RW is not detected by windows. Is there any way to get it worked? CD-RW isn't available here and I need one to install XP to my bro's lappy. I know this is a silly question but I really want to know.

Yeah, I tried to reformat. But the disc wasn't getting rcognized at all. So NERO hanged. :(

And I'm using a DVD-RW now. :) Just wanted to know if there is a way as the disc itself is not bad.

You can use it.i tried it and it worked for me .
See if you have an image *.iso file that you could burn on a cd.
Then keep your drive empty closed and in nero select the image file to burn
Without inserting cd rw select burn option the drive tray would open.
Now insert disk cd rw and wait for some time should not be more than 5 min but the time could vary.
Now there will be a prompt asking you to erase the contents of the drive
Select yes and bingo it should
I have used this technique more than once so i am not telling something that happened by fluke.

use IMGBurn.

It has a CD RW Erase option which can forcibly erase the disk, bringing it back to normal.

Go to

Mode -> Write

Tools -> Drive -> Erase disc -> Full

OP is it worthy spending time on a single CD-RW. Switch to pen drives man, u can install XP from a 2GB pen drive also.

@Vivek

I know. I have DVD-RW, Pen Drive, External HDD etc. I was just curious to find if there is a way. :) And besides, 2-3 of my friends have only CD Drive and I am afraid to plug a USB drive for virus overflow in their machines. :P

@ggt and axeman

nothing worked. :( IMGBurn gives I/O error.

Well what message did you get with my method. If you get power callibration error you could try it on your friends writer. Coz my dvd writer nowa days does not erase cd rw. It does erases in pio mode. You could try that.

@delhiboy

I'm in Win 7 and don't have XP installed. The default Win 7 burner failed to recognize the drive. :(
